CD ERROR on your Head unit repair
Hey there everyone, I have got rid of my beloved Disco 3 and now have a RRS but there are many things the same so here is what i did a few months back to solve this error.
This should help anyone that has a “CDERROR†on their 6-Disc IHU (Integrated Head Unit), I’ve tried to make it as “walk through†as possible and if your head unit has this message on it, what have you got to lose anyway.
I purchased my used RRS HSE with the understanding that the IHU “SOMETIMES WOULDN’Tâ€play cds. (too say that was an understatement).
So I replaced the IHU A week later, as the wife wanted to have the option of listening to cds as well as the radio and her ipod via the aux input.
So this is what I did.
Firstly you will need to Purchase a damaged IHU from ebay or such like as the spares are not available to buy to the public ( I tried to get the spares direct from alpine but they no longer have them) and from what I gathered Land Rover will just Replace the Head Unit. I did not Purchase the spares and repairs stereo as I didn’t know if it was repairable at this time.
Firstly you will need 1 x small Phillips driver (PH01 to be exact) & 1 x even smaller Phillips driver (PH00) and a pair of long nose pliers or equivilante.
Once you have your screw drivers, spare IHU and a cup of tea you can begin.
Remove all the screws on the top as shown above with the PH01 driver.
Then the Backing screws as above.
A bit of "Gentle Persuasion" needed and the top cover will come off.
Remove the screws from the cooling housing.
Also these ones.
Remove the holding screws from the PCB (Printed Circuit Board) and the cooling housing.
Remove the Flat cables from the PCB connections, (these will come out with little effort), Then remove the final fixing screw from the PCB.
Locate the PCB's Holding Tab and twist it 45 degrees anti-clockwise until it looks like the picture below.
You can now remove the PCB from the IHU.
Remove the insulation and place under the PCB so you dont forget it. Did you really do that ? dont blame me if you forget to put it back in then i didnt forget it when i was rebuilding it
Remove the 2 Screws from the Front facia.
Gently persuade the securing tabs up and pull the facia away from the Housing.
Do the same on the bottom and remove the facia, taking care not to pull the Flat cables.
Remove screw A,B,C,D,E,F,G & H then remove the front of the cd changer.
Remove all the screws from the bottom of the CD changer, (i did this at the start but things moved about isde when its done like that, and they dont need to be out until this stage, thats why the picture still has the front on).
Turn the CD Changer Back over and remove screws A & B, Then Remove the PCB Housing from the cd changer
It will look like this.
Remove the CD Changer. It will just lift out now.
Lift the fixing tabs up from the flat cables and remove them.
Remove all the top screws from the CD Changer (PH00 Driver now).
And the Screws from the Transit runners.
Remove the 3 screws from the front of the cd changer.
Lift the top of the CD Changer at an angle as shown.
Slide it gently towards the CD Changers PCB.
Ensure that the Disc locator tab is lifted above the CD players Lens travel bracket. As shown here.
Now slide it forward to remove the disc housing from the CD Changer (Finally).
Removal of the "CD Transit Brackets can now take place"
These are the disc transit brackets as far as im concerned.
This is why you get the "CDERROR" message on the IHU notice the left one (Good) and the right one (Broken) these little blighters are what causes the discs to get backed up against each other and then they wont be able to be selected.
So once you have got this far replace the broken ones for the ones from the spare stereo and follow the steps in reverse and hey presto you have just repaired your IHU and Saved yourself £250 from a specialist
Happy tinkering
Many Thanks to Martin for all the advice on Posting this up cheers again pal
It's a long shot but it worked for me, get a damaged one off the bay and just change the cd changer over only to your unit and hopefully all being well it will work. Done this with mine and its been fine, it's great because the unit comes apart in 3 sections and its fairly easy to take apart. Cost me nothing in the end as posted back on the bay as spares or repair and got a lot more than I paid for it.

Disco3Dave, that's the attitude to have pal, just get stuck in about it, I'm just very interested to know and find the problem and repair it as like you say it there it would only have take. Roughly 30 mins to do it your way due to the way everything comes apart,,,,,,, good effort that man,,,
Here is a plan for you pal, i could lend you the working IHU and you send me your IHU
Il repair yours for you with the spares I've got and you could pay me for the little plastic bits and my time by donating to the site or you could just buy the IHU out right and il take yours in part exchange and cut a deal
Up to you pal
Nelly

Yaxman, thanks for looking,
I never took the PCB for the controls off but if the eject buttons is lacking springyness follow the guide until the controls are off remove the PCB and either replace or mend the little rubber return stop behind it or install a little compression spring wouldn't need to be much and you'd be done after 2 cups of tea
Cheers
