Upper Tailgate Struts - no lift

Tailgate only opens half way and needs to be pushed upwards to open fully. The two struts have lost their oomph Whistle

Can they be 'recharged' or is only option to swap in new ones?

Dead easy to do and you can get replacements for about £14 from 3rd party suppliers - and get uprated ones if you have a ladder and would like a little more ooophh

Standard are 485Nm - I have 520Nm - though you have to watch your chin if you let go Laughing

Pretty generic items and I am sure a certain sponsor would be able to provide a good price.

Thumbs Up

Most if not all Automotive gas struts cant be recharged..its one of those dont try this at home things...
for what they do & how little they cost.......just change them.

You may find its only one side that has lost its gas and needs changing.
Beware not to undo the ball fitting that goes into the car body, in fact check it is tight as the nut is not captivated and will fall into oblivion Thumbs Up .

Had the same problem with mine, just wouldn't keep up the tail gate.

My solution was to take both struts off, operated them (pushing down on the strut) letting it extend on its own then give the (chrome part) strut a good wipe with a clean cloth. Did this sequence about 6 times put the struts back on the tail gate and worked like new (no slow drop). No recurring problems in 3 months.
