Vehicle failure
Hi all, I thought a few months of issue free driving was too good to last..
Driving back from Kidderminster over the weekend I had a bit of a panic when the radio stopped, stated vehicle failure and then shut down, along with the sat nag screen, dash clock and temperature reading. Engine carried on fine. After a few minutes it all cam back up and we came home no issues.
Went to the tip this morning and it happened again, refused to come back on.. but with engine running and driving fine. at a set of traffics lights decided to restart the engine thinking it’ll reboot the radio only for the car to refuse to start. Dash lit up as normal, could hear the relay but no starter motor. Dash showing epb fault, hld fault etc etc.
With traffic backed up behind me (yes, still sat at the traffic lights) I Plugged the Autel in and basically had every error it could display, once the diag had finished I hit clear faults with crossed fingers, about half way through the radio sprung to life, so did the hazards I’d switched on and after waiting for all the faults to clear, engine started first time.
Finished the tip run, went home no issues.ran a fresh diag when I got home and seeing the codes below. Anyone have any ideas? Cars been running great, no issues, no work done etc that could cause anything.
When it happened the weekend I was happy to put it down as a one off but twice in two journey now 2008 HSE Stornoway Grey

All those codes are communications ones so could be a CANBUS issue the radio is on the medium speed CANBUS with the following modules:
Integrated Head Unit (IHU) or low line head unit
Heating and ventilation control module
Fuel burning heater
Park distance control
Tyre pressure monitoring control module
Central junction box
Check the connection behind the instrument cluster as I've read sometimes that one works it's way loose, I guess the other connection to check is on the Central junction box (water ingress?)

Typically when a shut down occurs like you describe, I would be looking at the battery, alternator and their connections especially the earth one.

Doubtful it’s the battery / alternator as both are only 12 months old.
I’ll check out the junction box today but it was clear last time I was in there and if I get time I’ll pull the instrument cluster and take a look.

Soooo, interesting update, I didn’t have chance to look at the car today, however, used it to go to the shops and error didn’t come up BUT when I parked at the market the parking brake refused to come on, no motor noise...no errors... nothing. Left it in park, did the shopping, drove somewhere else parked up and parking braked worked as normal...drove home, pulling into my road and radio, sat nag, clock all went off, hazards came on (but no relay clicking sounds) got home and ran the codes
Basically nothing working. Reset the codes, car still wouldn’t star, reset again and while I was waiting I noticed that the led bulb in my courtesy light was flickering, been doing this on and off for a week or two, while I was waiting for the codes to reset I pulled it out to replace and coincidence or not, car sprang into life!
Re-ran the diag and zero faults now showing Could it be a canbus led bulb dropping errors that caused the issues or just a coincidence?
Will take it for a drive tomorrow and see what’s what2008 HSE Stornoway Grey

Garage swapped it out so should be but unsure. You thinking over charging? Voltage display is showing around 12-14 ish volts whenever I look, just checked and alternator was replaced October 2019 and no issues since then.
I added the split charger & aux battery back in August but again, no issues with that I’ve seen.2008 HSE Stornoway Grey

There are a lot if threads on here of members fitting non Denso alternators and either having strange faults or the alternator fails after a short time.
Dont go changing the alternator but i would just check the charging rate and if you have an occiliscope it would be worth making sure you are getting a good steady voltage with no voltage spikes.
I would also check the condition of the earth wires, from the battery to body and the one in the drivers side wheel arch that connects the body, chassis and engine.Andrew

Just a catch up, found the fault, it’s definitely the instrument cluster solder issue (90% sure anyway) last time the fault hit, so did I…..a fist right into the center of the cluster right between the dials and low and behold, the fault went away. Have “fixed” it a couple of times over the weekend in the same way, so have booked it into totaltronics and posting it over tomorrow.2008 HSE Stornoway Grey
