Vibration under braking

Currently experiencing an intermittent heavy vibration under braking in my MY15 D4 and wondered if anyone had any ideas.

Basically from high speed, let’s say 80 down to 50mph, there’s a heavy vibration that can be felt through the steering wheel and through the whole body of the car. It’ll do it for days then halfway through a journey it’ll just stop and everything will be smooth again. And repeat

Ordinarily I’d think it was the brake discs out of true, or warped, but as there doesn’t appear to be any pulsing on the pedal I’m not really sure. Also, the way it comes and goes suggests it’s something else. The car has 39,000 miles on it and had the pads changed last November.

Any ideas?

Had similar to this and it was the nearside front driveshaft worn, it had also warped the brake disc! The symptons did come and go for a few weeks as I tried to fathom the possibilities then braked hard on the motorway and the steering went wild!

Straight into Broadfields at Gt Dunmow for repairs.

Had this on my D3, fixed by replacing all the suspension arms as bushes on way out. Car now completely different but no vibration under braking!

When I was getting this from disc problems it was, as you say from high speed but under gentle braking (to scrub some speed off). If you pressed the pedal harder the steering wheel shake would stop (or reduce). It never happened at low speeds under harder braking. There was never any pulsing of the brake pedal.

The vibe can come from the rear brakes, not just the fronts.

Had this on my D4, from new and the dealer never quite got to the bottom of it. Eventually it turned out to be a partially seized front caliper. That was changed 1000's of miles ago, and its been fine ever since.

It was found by using a IR thermometer on the disks after the symptom appeared. The hot disk was an indication of the wheel with the stuck caliper. It wasn't seized solid, it was just giving a little too much resistance on the piston.

Thanks for the replies, chaps. Been on holiday so haven’t been online much to reply.

The seized caliper did cross my mind as I remember thinking the OSF wheel and disc were giving off a lot more heat than the near side. It’s got the Lr Approved warranty but I don’t want to take it in and be stung with a bill for ££££s for new discs or having them look at it. Not when I’m considering replacing the car anyway!

As Al has described, the vibration could be from front or rear discs. There are also a whole host of other possibles, one being gearbox.
The only way to really get the answer to a heat related brake fault is to change the most likely culprit. If you can, get a second opinion from someone who knows, maybe even a willing forum user here.
The indy garages are usually willing to take a look for you, and will be alot less than a LR approved workshop to deal with.
Speculation will give you ideas, but that's all that they are.
If it helps..
Cold discs and gentle braking doesn't produce judder? Firm braking producing more heat does?
There's a clear pointer of the first step.
Gentle braking is mostly using front end brakes. With speed and firmer braking, the rears come into play.

Had this on mine when I first bought it.. and it was the rears. Changed them.out, and judder was gone.

Could be something as simple as wheel weights fallen off ...

Ok so i had the same problem on mine recently - for example when braking from motorway speed to take to a slip road. Mine was cured by new front discs - turned out mine were badly scored on the inside of the disc. probably a stone but never heard any screeching and never found the stone.

My MY15 D4 was warping discs every approx. every 4k miles. LR replaced the discs and pads several times and also the full hub assembly. It still didn't fix the problem and I rejected the vehicle as not fit for purpose.

Thanks for the replies and input. Seems I need to make a decision whether to commit to keeping this car or whether to move on and try something else. I’ve only got 8 months left on the PCP so don’t really want to be spending £500 on it if it’s going back or, more likely, getting traded in. Things is, my wife loves this car and it really is part of the family!

Take heart, it might be a slightly sticking caliper as per Gareth's post. Or just a one off. My current MY16 D4 had warped front discs changed under warranty at c.18k miles. It's now at 44k miles and they're still fine.
