Viscous fan removal - any hints???

So today I serviced the disco, and on the list is a new aux belt and I also want to replace the bearing in the tensioner. I tried the other week to get the viscous fan off, but it was too tight. This week I ordered a hub holding tool and gave it another go. I still can't get it to budge. I even harnessed the power of tea, and all that did was mean I sheared the bolt in the hub holding tool!!! I know it's left hand thread (so clockwise to undo). I've been in the engine back with my knee on the hub holder, and hitting the spanner with a hammer. I even got SWMBO to lend a hand and it just won't go Big Cry

Are there any other tips for getting it off? Or are there some fans that are there for life. I got some good tips for the doing the suspension arms off here, so fingers crossed!

It's an 06 2.7 TDV6 if it makes any difference.

I think I'll have to try getting the belt and tensionser out without taking the fan off.

Left hand thread, use a long cold chisel and give it a firm clout on the edge of one of the nut faces Thumbs Up

I've got some long bearing drifts so I'll give that a go tomorrow. Hopefully it's more effecting than hitting the spanner Thumbs Up

I wouldn't bother with generic tools just get the proper set of TDV6 fan spanners.

Well I tried the chisel method (although it was a long bearing drift I used) and a big mallet. Nothing, wouldn't budge. I just ended up marking the nut. I got some good hits on the edge too. The hub holder I have seems to give a good grip, but after putting bars on the edge of the spanner and that hub holder I sheared another bolt in the hub holding tool. And before anybody suggests it, I know it's LH thread (if it isn't it's going to be bloody tight now Laughing )

In the end it was actually much easier to remove the air intake pipe and pop the top fan cowling off. I was only after changing the aux belt and tensioner and actually this was really easy. I wish I'd done that from the start. One day I'll have to battle with the fan again I'm sure, but for now I know it's not going to fall off at least!!

a ring spanner on one of the bolts on the front of the fan can be used to wedge the fan to stop it turning so that the large nut can be undone with the appropriate sized spanner
