For those who want to keep their Land Rovers..

For all the naysayers out there who are quite happy to rely on their insurance when their Land Rovers get stolen please ignore this post and relax…

For the rest of us who couldn’t afford the loss and aggravation in losing one then here goes…

Unfortunately JLR products less than 5 years old are being stolen in huge numbers.. it would be inappropriate for me to quantify the actual number but currently it is eye watering! The latest theft method affects all post 17-18 plate vehicles even with the new platform. Entry to the vehicle is either by a blocked signal denying the owners ability to lock their car or via the basic auto locksmiths key pick..

Once inside the vehicle the new emulators currently on sale now attack the car systems in a different way.. rather than attacking the ignition immobiliser circuitry they are attacking via the back door route into the stop start circuitry.. superbly clever and the devices will just instruct the engine to start..

The devices are sold cheaply, some via genuine supposed ‘locksmith’ premises!

Hence the advice now is secondary alarm system separate from the OEM system, steering wheel locks, and more importantly OBD locking devices which will prevent the thief plugging their device into the car!

Not nice news but better to be forewarned…

More importantly those looking to buy a Land Rover then be doubly cautious! I have seen the figures and they are shocking.. thus don’t chase that bargain …. And trust your instincts…

If you are buying privately the best piece of advice I can give is get the car checked out properly, only ever complete the sale on the kitchen table of the owners house and never ever meet at a third party location!

Yeah ... like all those Gladioli growers getting their kit from hydroponics outlets that advertise with cardboard placards taped to traffic lights. Mad

Very cheap fix for this: cut the wire to the starter motor en wire it up to a hidden switch in the cabin.

Very Happy Providing you also cut the stop start circuit as well!

OK Thumbs Up

I'm interested...could someone post detailed instructions on how to:-

a. Cut the wire to the starter motor and wire it up to a hidden switch in the cabin. What gauge of wire is required, what switch is best, where should it be located & how does one run the wire.

b. Simply disconnect the stop/start circuit? Where & how?

Thanks in advance.

I would prefer to have a Ghost Alarm fitted, rather than a DIY switch. Obviously the later would be much cheaper though.

+1 on Ghost.

Superb system...

Had mine fitted by Ed at Drive Talk in the West Midlands. He installs for a number of JLR dealers in and around the West Mids. He travels widely to install if anyone is interested.

I recommend him.
