Just bought a MSX5.0 test & charge last week, excellent bit of kit. Based on the specs, the basic MSX5.0 is more than man enough for a Discovery battery and at around £50 is great value, the Test & Charge version is £90 LRs are a fond memory, apart from the maintenance.

ok thanks. I guess the MX10 is faster to charge, but the 5 is sufficient for maintaining the disco, and at half the price seems well worth it.
thanks.
MSX5 will charge batteries upto 110Ah from flat, and maintaince charge batteries of upto 160Ah, so the Disco is within the from Flat range for an OEM battery, I believe they are 95Ah. Even the new Tayna one I fitted to the older D4 is only 100Ah, so again within range. LRs are a fond memory, apart from the maintenance.
I have a msx7 and its ample for all my cars including the D3

I recommend the mxs10 for the D3/D4 as the smaller ones can run out of grunt when things are not going your way. The smaller ones are better as trickle chargers and for that you can even use the smallest Ctek.

Sorry for resurrecting an old thread, however I have a couple of queries and this thread seemed most appropriate:
1. Will the CTEK MSX10 be OK/work well with the batteries in a 2016MY D4 with Stop /Start? Or, should I get a CTEK stop/start version that they do.
2. How do I ensure both normal and stop start batteries are charged if I haven't got towing electrics? Charge through the 12v socket in the car? Or do I need to charge each separately via a connection to each and a good earth on the body? (Obviously not both at the same time).

1. MXS10 works fine with the cranking battery and can be connected via the towing electrics or via +ve terminal and good ground point (NOT -ve terminal).
2. Secondary battery needs to be charged separately as is not directly connected to the cranking battery. Both batteries are AGM! D4 MY14 XXV - RLD/IID BT

Do I/we have two batteries then?.....
I have the one big battery under the bonnet but unsure if I have one elsewhere.
The only reason I ask is because coincidentally I’m conditioning the battery as we speak, using a 5, will this also do the other battery (if I have one?!) or will I need to do that separately??
Thanks!

If you have Stop/Start you will have two batteries.
The smaller stop/start battery needs to be charged separately, if you have one.
Whether you bother to charge it is up to you. I would be delighted if mine didn't work.

Thanks! I do have start-stop (which I always turn off!), does this battery only power the stop-start system or if it were low/flat would it effect starting the car from cold?
The only reason I ask is because I’ve got a flat battery this morning (after having remotely turned the fbh on - I thought it wasn’t meant to run if there wasn’t enough charge??!!), so have left the 5 running in recondition mode on the main battery, I won’t then need to touch it for 48 hours so all being well it will do it’s thing.
If I’m not worried about having stop-start do I need to bother charging the ss battery or should I also do this regardless?
Thanks for your help!

The secondary battery only provides power to essential systems during a stop/start cycle. It's a very small battery, so would be of no use trying to crank the engine!
I didn't think that CTEK recommended using the Recondition mode on an AGM battery, so it might be worth checking. I just use the normal AGM charging mode and it works fine. As NJSS said, if you're bothered about the stop/start, then you'll need to charge the secondary battery separately if you want to keep it in good condition.D4 MY14 XXV - RLD/IID BT

Thanks! I’m not bothered about stop-start so it looks like I don’t need to worry about charging the SS battery. Just out of interest, where is the SS battery?
As for not reconditioning the AGM battery, I was unaware of this but regardless have left it running while I’m now at work so have no way of stopping it anyway….!!!, will do some research but thanks for the pointer!
