Just to get a Warrior S 9500 high speed Syn (formerlyChampion I think) winch fitted to my D4. My local LR specialist who is going to fit it says he willl wire the earth direct to the main battery earth. The head technician at my LR dealer said the same thing.
I think I read somewhere on this or another forum that the earth lead should be connected to earth peg somewhere on the chassis or body. Why? Will I have problems if the earth is connected directly to the battery?
Bye the bye has anybody had experience of this winch.

Hi Discojools and you got it right.
Nothing should be connected to the battery’s negative terminal on either the D3 and more so with a D4.
If you have a look on the guard wall just in front of the cranking battery compartment, there are two earth studs and you can earth your winch there.
Or you can run the earth all the way back to where the battery is earthed at the stud in the guard wall behind the fuse box, but thats a big job to get to. 2008 TDV8 RR Lux + 2009 D4 2.7

Out of interest what would happen if winch is earthed on the battery? Interesting that even the dealer doesn't know about this. Also find it hard to believe that all the winches fitted to D3s and 4s by various people like ARB etc have earthed on the studs.
Why would I want to earth to the stud behind the fuse box if the 2 studs in front of the battery are OK? Is that one better for some reason?

Hi again Julian and the two earth studs in front of the battery compartment are 6mm bolts while the one behind the fuse box is 8mm and is the cranking battery’s earth point. It’s all a case of how pedantic you are.
As for wiring to the to the cranking battery’s negative terminal, there is a battery monitoring device in the cable that runs from the cranking battery’s negative terminal to the battery earth point ( stud ).
Running any loads off the cranking battery’s negative terminal can cause erroneous info being gathered by the ECU.
You can bolt directly to the cranking battery’s positive terminal but you must source negative from one of the many earth studs and not the battery’s negative terminal. 2008 TDV8 RR Lux + 2009 D4 2.7
