Looks like I tightened those nuts too well. The lock nuts seem like they are there to stay. Any tips for getting these off?

Right chaps some further road testing has highlighted the following

No wobble or shimmy up to 40mph and the car is very smooth

Wobble kicks in at 42mph + and is really noticeable at 45 mph all the way up to about 70mph when it eases off again.

Im thinking this may indicate a balancing problem. I know Al Cope had these balanced carefully but I feel the above holds a glimmer of hope that it may just be a balancing problem. Will try and get these digitally balanced tomorrow. Al I hope that "donkey" as you put it that balanced yours turns out to be a donkey!

Thumbs Up

Yeh, but I had them done again after the first idiot (who tried to balance them without taking the old weights off), and watched the guy. He took ages, and seemed very thorough. I'd love it to be balancing (and will be kicking myself if thats what it turns out to be, as how many times can tyre places screw up, and charge for the pleasure!) I'm always dubious about the quality of the balancing kit in some of these places. If you've got somebody you know and can trust, then great. Be interesting to get them to check the balance before removing any of the weights to see if they are out, as they usually pull all the old weights off befoer sticking the wheel on the balancer.

Out of interest Al was it the same place that did the balancing for you?

It also indicates a resonant frequency problem - the sort of thing damping gets rid of. I can only assume Ronp's rack is at the "tight" end of tolerances somewhere and has enough natural damping to avoid the problem - either that or there is some other factor on D3s like his that mean the resonance doesn't occur or more likely the natural freq is just shifted up or down out of the realms of normal driving speeds....
 Cheers

No, completely different place. The second place I tried sold 20" RR alloys, so I thought they'd be more familiar with handling these bigger alloys.

On the frequency topic, remember the RR TD6 had a resonance issue if fitted with 20" alloys. This was when stationary if I recall correctly.

Googsy, I had a little run about on different surfaces/speeds etc. There was a bit of what I can only describe as Kick back through the steering when on bumpy back roads. I adjusted the pressures to 34 at the front and 38 at the back (not sure what its supposed to be or what others are running them at) and that seems to have cured it completely.

There is definately a wheel wobble though through the steering so I will get the balancing checked next week and let you know if it cures it.

Shrinky - sounds like the non-damped steering shimmer again.

I'll try 33 and 36 Thumbs Up They were supplied at 40 which probably explains the origional kick back I was getting.

Just hoping that they are not quite balanced.

I saw a black 56 plate D3 in Plymouth this morning with 20" Stormers fitted, and it looked so nice I'm looking at fitting some myself now. I didn't get a chance to speak to the driver about 'shimmy' as I was running the Plymouth Half Marathon at the time, and I assume it wasn't anyone on here as there was no D3 sticker visible. If a damper would solve the problem, has anyone seen what the RRS setup is like - where it attaches to the steering and chassis? Surely it can't be too difficult to retro-fit - can it?

ridgeback

I have the pics of both racks, so know what they look like. On the D3 and RRS they have two different steering racks, one dampened (RRS) and one undamped (D3). I believe they are interchangeable, the the RRS one (if I recall), is approx £500, the D3 approx £300 (The large one could confirm prices)

Its not like the D1 where the steering damper was a separate item.
