| 20 inch with 295 45 Grabbers Update we live in hope! |
|
I took car for a long spin earlier today to test the feel of the 20's on the road. Without doubt the choice of the 295 45 Grabbers makes the car more secure and I would argue smoother that the 19s I had on the car. What was apparent however was on certain road surfaces the steering wheel if let go would wobble right to left but if held it wasnt really that noticeable but could still feel a slight shimmy or vibration. Would be interested to know from RonP etc running a similar setup if you would agree with steering wheel wobble if not it may indicate a different problem .
cheers

Might be worth noting that std spec for RRS fitted with 20" (or those that might be for instance MY07 onwards HSE where Dynamic Pack less 20" is std), have the damped steering rack fitted, as this rack isn´t fitted to the D3 I suspect this is why some (can´t explain why not all), D3 fitted with 20"s experience steering shimmy whereas 19"s are fine... Cheers

Yeah, I'd agree
Sounds very much like that the dampened steering rack, is needed. However, while there was a TSB for the RRS, I don't know if there is one for the D3, as they are not listed as compatible with 20" rims.
I'm sure you'll be able to have one fitted Googsy, just not under warranty
Ask Marcon, as I vaguely remember he had similar issues when he first put on the Stormers. “You feel uneasy as the mad scientist locks the door behind you & dissolves the key in a vat of Acid !”

googsy - i have the exact same problem with the stormers, slight vibration / wobble. To be honest I barely notice it anymore, think I have just got used to it!

I am afraid it might cause another issue like loss of control so just thinking of safety first. I was thinking I might have them re balanced but unsure if this will solve. I will get 19s balanced tomorrow and refit them with my dodgy trolley jack. Googsy

There is that of course, it's not the end of the world. I doubt if the car is going leap off the road anytime soon due to the "wobble".
Still though, if you could get the new rack, it does smooth things out nicely “You feel uneasy as the mad scientist locks the door behind you & dissolves the key in a vat of Acid !”

Hi Googsy
I cant find the post where I'd commented on this, as it was one of the reasons I went back to 19's. It was very fractional, but as I'm doing 20k plus miles a year, it wasnt somethink I felt I could live with. I had those wheels balanced very carefully, so I dont think its a balance issue. I'm inclined to go with the damped steering rack theory, although it doesnt seem to be an issue that affects all, as RonP said, he's seen no poblems, and others are running 20's as well with no issues. Pity, as they look the dogs dodahs.

maybe Ronp has twitchy arms that compensate for shimmy (joking) Yeah its a pity as they do look the dogs. Looks like a return to the 19s when I can find the energy! Googsy

Same with mine , ruled out all the usual suspects , no unusual wear on the tyre . I just got used to it TBH. Don't take life too seriously ..... it's not permanent

Googsy this might not be the same thing but for the last couple of months i have noticed a very minor steering wheel wobble very very minor but noticeable . Thought it might have been wheel balancing but i have just swapped my wheels and tyres from 19"MTRs to 19" wranglers and it is exactly the same. I intend to have a probe about the front with a lever to see what i can find and will have the dealer take a look next time i am there but i think we have the same problem and your 20's just highlight the fault earlier ,might be wrong just giving you my thoughts ,wiil keep you posted
mine looks s**t without the MTRs on even swmbo agre ,suppose i will get used to the road tyres I think 20's look remember ,don't wizz on the electric fence

Googsy, I've had my wheels on a week, done 1000 miles. Not noticed any wobbles as such.
Definately feels more planted on the motorway but maybe ever so slightly nervous over a bumpy surface but not very much. In fact, If you'd never driven on standard 18" rims I don't think you'd even notice. The difference is that subtle.
Not noticed any tramlining so far either.
