2005 LR3 Premature Leather Steering Wheel Wear |
|
Has anyone experienced premature leather wear on the topside of the steering wheel? The dealer is telling me they will "repair" this wear but I'm uncomfortable that this will be only a temp fix. (My 2005 LR3 has 29,000 mi)

I will post the photo later tonight. I am in Florida and the summer heat appears to be breaking the leather down. It has become "sticky" and retains actual finger prints.

Eh? how did that happen 29k (US - not Imperial) miles in a country with no (navigable) bends I didn't know a steering wheel was standard equipment over there...
either you have a very firm grip or the hairs on the palms of your hands are very abrasive!
They'll probably just change the steering wheel - don't worry Oh, welcome to Disco3.co.uk

That sounds very odd. It was pretty hot here this summer just gone (saw 39 degrees one day which was very unusual for Britain) and my hands did not stick to the wheel!

I've had no trouble and it got so hot here last summer that they had to close down two lanes of the swimming pool! Have a nice day!

The top of my steering wheel is sticky I used an industrial wipe to clean the steering wheel and it melted the coating or whatever it is, you can see finger prints embedded into the wheel now. In the Beginning there was nothing, which exploded.

How did you get on with this as I have just taken this up with Matford and they are'looking into it' after trying to clean it themselves. Mines done 17000 Pot Noodle Challenge Winner 2011

Dealer replaced the entire wheel instead of attempting a repair. Replacement was completely performed under warranty.

Is that the pool that slopes down to the southern end? My mate swum over there and said it was up hill swimming to the north. Did you think I would leave you crying,

I had my steering wheel replaced under warranty by my dealer without any questions. After 9 months it had stated to wear in the "1/4 to 3" position, the grain of the material (not sure it's actually leather?) had worn completely smooth & was sticky to the touch.
I've never seen this before.

From Florida too and had mine replaced |
|
I live in Florida too 8) and I firmly believe the heat we get here has much to do with the problem. I am a college student here at the University of Miami and don't have any rings (yet) so I can confirm that the rings have little to do with this unusual leather condition. I had my wheel replaced 2 months ago, it was about a year old and it was displaying the problems you state exactly. The "leather" was getting tacky and would actually peel up with a fingernail stroke. It was quite uncomfortable. I took it into the dealer and they replaced it in under an hour for me. They say it's a known problem and they gave me no trouble about it (I was worried that I would have to prove that I hadn't used any chemical cleaners on it, but they never asked).
The new wheel actually looks like it was made using a different leather (if it is indeed leather, I was never sure). There is less texture to the wheel cover and it looks like it might be made of a better quality material. Hope this helps!
