Brake light, odd connector, what is it?
Hi All,
I was about to try and change the rear brake light bulbs, but noticed the 'thing' in the photo had come lose. I've no idea what it is or how important it is for it to be connected. If anyone can tell me what is or whether I even need to be concerned I'd appreciate it.

Not much good at maintenance and usually just send it to ribblesdale but felt its about time I try and do something myself.
This is on a 55 LR3 V8 SE.
Thanks in advance.
Rocky.

That would make sense, perhaps connecting to the chassis acts as an ariel. So long as I'm not going to short anything out because it's not attached is the main thing.
I've taken a couple more shots. No writting anywhere.

Do you have a tracking device in your car? It could be the GPS ariel for that.Roel

Do you know where the standard GPS antenna for the sat nav is housed?

hmmm, strange one.
Anyways, tried swapping out the bulbs and checked the fuse all seemed okay. Looks like a trip to Ribblesdale, Monday.

Judging by the CE on the sticky pad, I'm guessing that there used to be a sticker on the module that's now bonded upside down to the sticky fixing pad. If you're desperate to find out what it is, you could carefully remove the sticky pad and do a CSI on it
It does look like a GPS module; do you have satnav? It may be a correction to a build that should have had a GPS module in the brake light, but didn't, hence they needed somewhere else to put it to correct the build without ripping the tailgate apart.
Either that or you're being tracked by your missus Dr. Ian Malcolm:

It certainly does look like a GPS from some form of after market device that has been fitted.
Perhaps it would be worth following the cable.
Just to the box, not the Van with the blacked out windows hiding round the corner
Seriously, I have actually come across GPS or other radio location devices before in a number of vehicles.
All have been innocent enough, ex fleet, de commisioned trackers etc, but it does make you think.
If you bought the vehicle on finance, its possible the finance company had it installed without your knowledge.
