D3 to FL2 - should I ?
Just having some thoughts:
My D3 is now 6 years & 1 month old!
Has 160k on the clock!
No warranty and has some regular repairs [but still in excellent fettle]!
Over £100 to fuel and that can be on a daily basis with the high miles I do.
If I were to change to a D4 I'd be forking out £47k to £51k [for a Landmark or HSE].
That's a lot of money when business aint that good.
So thinking on something cheaper to buy and run so thoughts went to the FL2.
I can get a 3 month old [new style] HSE SD4 Auto model on 4k with all the kit for just under £31k.
[LR Build price new is over 38k].
OK I can get a decent secondhand D3/4 for that money, but the high running costs will still be there.
I don't really need the 7 seats, though I do utilise the load space in the D3.
I don't do much off roading nowadays as the vehicles have got to last me.
But big plus is the FL2 purchase price and general running costs - fuel, tax, servicing etc.
Plus I'll have just under a three year warranty if/when things go wrong.
So just wondering on peoples comments/experiences on my thoughts.
I was a normal heterosexual chap, but in these new woke awakenings I now identify as a Wardrobe.

12mpg more, useful with fuel going to push £1.50/ltr!! Sell now while prices are crazy, once the winter is a memory and after the next couple of revolts in oil producing countries puts fuel up to more stupid leve,l D3s will nose dive value wise. Sell now while it's in your favour.

Logical thoughts until you look at the detail of the 'whole life cost of a FL2 V D4' i.e. will depreciation kill the savings in fuel and errm fuel ? D3/D4 holding the value pretty well against the FL2 at that price/age.SOLD - 23my Range Rover Sport D300 Dynamic SE

Ronp go for it if it suits your situation................................
You will be back within six months, FL2 is great but in no way compares to a D3/D4.

But I don't really think that'll have too much effect on my vehicles due to the high mileage I put on them.
They'll be worthless anyway, whether its 100k or 160k.
And is it not the case that the more economical a vehicle is - the more it'll hold it's price.
Heard this week through the motortrade that small fuel efficient vehicles are [especially now] holding their price better than larger less efficient ones.

Suppose at those miles...
If fuel price today had remained the same since my D3 was new it would have cost over £25k in fuel so I guess that's a lot of depreciation. SOLD - 23my Range Rover Sport D300 Dynamic SE

Sounds logical Ron but I can't believe what I am reading. Seriously considering selling the D3???
First dibs on the wheels
On a more serious note Ron, have you considered depreciation on a new vehicle against the D3. Your stunning looking and well kept D3 with 160K on the clock wont depreciate that fast in the next 2 years.
How much will a 3 month old FL2 depreciate in the next 2 years? A hell of a lot more. Will that outweigh the running costs and depreciation of the D3?
Buying a new(ish) car is the worst investment you can make (looking at it money wise and not considering the fun factor).
And if you really want to go forward with this ridiculous plan wait 6 months and buy a 3 month old e-Evoque.....CLUB ILLEGAL CAR WASHERS

Thoughts that a lot of people will be having Ron, this fuel situation is a bit crazy. Your D3, I suspect is worth more to you than it's true value, you could buy a uber mpg cheap estate car and keep the D3.Captain Nick Medhurst would ask:
"What is the first rule when overlanding?"
I would Reply:

we've got an FL2 and a D£ on the drive,, the real MPG on the FL2 is 32-35... it still costs a packet to fill up,, just not quite as bad as the D3,,, £31k?? don't bother with an HSE,, go lower,, XS or something like that,, we paid £14k for 40k miles 3 years old,, then it starts to make sense,,,
but paying out £31k just doesnt make a whole lot of sense,,,
the FL2 does drive ok too,, i like it,, but i LOVE my D£one wife.......livid

Fuel costs aren't the killer, it's depreciation so you need to factor that in. You obviously see the cost of filling up but check out the 12 month cost of 25mpg vs 35mpg and then look at whatever you lose on purchase price over a few years. I was disappointed at losing £15k on my 2 year old XF i.e. £7.5k a year but when I looked back, I lost £7k on FL1 and the figures don't change much for cars in this range whenever you buy/sell.
Anyway, my recommendation is a nice Aston Martin 2010 MX-5 2.0 Sport Tech PRHT
2019 Suzuki Vitara AllGrip
Gone BMW X5 xDrive 30d M Sport (F15)
Gone Disco 4 HSE SD V6
Gone 2008 Jaguar XF 2.7TD Premium Luxury

What about a 2009 or 2010 D3/D4 LR approved dealer car? Would have a small bit of warranty left and depreciation already hit, could then buy an extended warranty.16 D4 Landmark

Ronp mate,
sorry to see what i am reading too!! but needs must etc,and the state of the climate is affecting alot of us I'm looking at FL2's, not to replace my D3 YET, but to replace the missus Audi S3-nice car buts its on lease and costing ££££'s a month for not alot of use,so i'm trying to get out of that and then buy a FL/FL2 at at fair price, won't be going HSE tho.
Anyway good luck with your decision mate, mean time can i have your grille
