They come on when you press the heater "prog" button or when you press the heated windscreen button. 2000 Discovery 2 Kent Green (totaled) R.I.P.

Actually I think that they're always on.......or maybe just for x minutes after starting the car, but I don't believe that their function is controlled by any of the buttons on the dash...
I'll have a look into it later on this morning 2006 Discovery 3 TDV6 SE Auto Buckingham Blue

No they don't
I knew I'd read about this a year or so ago so I've just double checked...
They always switch on with the ignition unless the outside temp is >35°C. or <-10°C.
After a few minutes mins (again depending on the outside temp), they will then work at a lower rate (controlled by the climate control module using a PWM signal to activate a relay in the BJB) whose duty cycle is dependant on the outside temp and whether or not the windscreen wipers are activated.
The heated windscreen nozzles work the same way.... 2006 Discovery 3 TDV6 SE Auto Buckingham Blue

Mine seem to come on by themselves when it's cold. The washer nozzles don't seem to do much and they are definitely the heated sort.
You should have them Dave on yours.

Yep - not sure about the heated nozzles - I think they only come with the cold climate pack or depending on the market, but all D3s have heated mirrors. 2006 Discovery 3 TDV6 SE Auto Buckingham Blue

whats the story with the heated washer nozzles switching on, as on some days I can see the "warm" circle around the nozzles where the frost has melted, and on other days, nothing.

I'm not sure what's up with the heated nozzles. Mine weren't working but yesterday I had a defrosted ring (steady!) around each one. My meter showed they were drawing the same current as when they didn't work
I'm now guessing that they were always working but they are so under powered that they can only defrost anything when temperatures are around freezing, and not good enough below say -3C. Not sure that's very comforting.
I wonder if they can be modified to increase the heat. Anyone ever taken one apart? If it's a heated tape system (and judging by the way it limits its own current, it probably is) then perhaps taking the heater out of spare set of washers and putting it in with the originals will double the available heat into something useful.
