Disco 4 eating headlight bulbs

Hi

I've had my 2010 D4 since August and needed a new dipped beam bulb shortly afterwards. I decided to change both sides and the main beams for Phillips X-Treme Vision +130% H7's.

The same dipped beam bulb then went again 07/03 so I replaced it like for like.

I've come out to car this morning to find the dipped beam on the other side has now given up the ghost!

Has anyone had similar issues?

I've noticed on both occasions this month that after turning off the ignition the car seems to still be making a noise a bit like a quiet jet engine but no fans appear to be on. Is this something else or related perhaps?

Any help much appreciated (as you can probably tell, I'm no mechanic!).

Cheers

If you put these brighter bulbs in they don't last as long, but I would've thought they would last a bit longer than you have experienced.

Cheers,

I still have 3 standard bulbs so might try one to see if it helps!

Just a thought but I wonder if your car is set for Xenon HID lights? I know the D3 has settings for HID or Halogen and if you set to HID the start up voltage is increased which will blow Halogen bulbs fairly quickly.

Maybe the previous owner upgraded to HID but then swapped back to Halogen before they sold it (but left the setting), I have heard of this a lot on D3's as the owners sell the sought after HID lamp units and refit the basic Halogens

Setting change is via an IID tool or similar

The fact the Phillips bulbs didn't last as long as normal bulbs is not surprising. I've just swapped to Phillips X-treme from Osram Night Breaker to see if the Phillips ones last any longer. Have been running Night Breakers in both the old D2 and the F1 for a while and they do go a lot sooner than standard H7s in my experience.

Thanks for the replies guys.

I'll look into it a bit further, maybe with standard bulbs to start with as I'm not going to keep buying bulbs as often as diesel!

When one of mine headlight bulbs went, I tried the "brighter" options from Halfords in mine (swapping both at the same time), and they lasted less than six months - one blew two days after the other. I put the old bulb back in one side and an old bulb from a collection in my garage in the other side. More than six months on, both are still working!!

Yeah, not looking good for the Phillips.....they are not 130% brighter if they don't work!

I had the standard halogen o/s dipped go in Dec, 2 months after buying the car, upgraded all dipped and highbeam with Ring from AF - much improved light but the same o/s dipped only lasted to March (3 months). Now trying Philips xtreme in the dipped. Similar output to the Ring, we'll see how long the Philips last, but my hopes are not high Confused

All "high output" legal bulbs get their brighter light output by using thinner wire and coiling it more tightly. To produce more of a point-source that can be aimed further out.

Thinner wire means they don't last as long.

Better converting to HIDs.

Was looking at the failed bulb earlier and noticed the tight coils.....it all falls into place! Cheers

Just got to sort the fuel gauge that decided to read empty on a full tank earlier Sad
