Help/Advice - rear prop shaft? Cv joint? Popping/clunking |
|
Afternoon all,
I was driving today through all the snow, water etc. No issues.
When I slowed down to enter the drive the car started to shudder/skip, the type or skip you sometimes get on snow.
Thought nothing of it. Then I pulled out in reverse and the same again. I stopped, tried high and low range, part and full steering lock, reversing and forwards. The symptom is the same, clunking/jumping, felt in steering and feels like it comes from the front and the rear. I’m proper confused and I’ve googled and searched. I’ve not got acces to ramps yet, but I thought it could be prop shaft gone or cv joint.
And other advice of had someone had similar experience?

Yeah it was in normal. I’ve not changed the selection. All tyres new and proper inflated.
The garage round the corner jumped in and didn’t even get out of car park. Said the rear diff has failed.
It just seems odd as no other clunking or noise in a straight line and it happened without any notice.

Could just be the transfer case needing to be calibrated as it can give the same skipping symptom. Bodsys Brake Bible

Hi Bodsy,
Is this something which will need to be done via plug in (OBD) or done via some trickery in the menu system?
Thanks for the suggestetuons so far!

Just an update on this:
When I take it out of drive just before a turn and keep it in Neutral, the clunk doesn’t happen (left or right). Any more ideas on what it could be? If it was the diff, then surely this would still happen?

Going to have to wait until Tuesday now until my garage can take a look. Will update when I know more. Tried again today with neutral and found it was still occasionally happening but far less violent. Maybe it’s me but I’m sure I can start to hear a drone coming from the front. My gut says it’s the diff. Tried so many different garages today to see if they could get it on the ramp but so many are fully booked!

update:
A recalibration as bodsy recommended fixed the issues. However, I had the garage change the oil as a precaution. £100 all in.
