Kaymar Spare - relocated inboard 18cm |
|
I like the Kaymar bumper and the jerry & tire carriers however I never liked how the right hand spare arm located the spare so far outboard (obviously to allow mounting 2 such carriers for 2 spares). I did like how the disco tire was inboard slightly to allow clear view of the rear lamps.
So, we simply cut it and moved it over about 18cm/7". This provides another benefit for bicycle carrying people who like to use the Thule spare tire mounted 2 bike rack. It's a nice enough rack, cheap enough and strong enough for two bikes of just about any kind, including down hill if you mount it thoughtfully. The rack has a plate mount that allows a couple inches of offset to deal with such situations but on the Kaymar, that still put one wheel way the heck out past the edge of the car evne with less than ideal offset mounting of the bike on the rack.
Then I came up with another idea, because the spare type rack only carries 2 bikes and is still not 'ideal'....we made a custom 2" receiver into the lower swing arm of the tire carrier. This allows a std hitch mounted bike rack of ones choice, fit on axis with the center of the car. It also keeps the bikes high away for tight parking situations, getting rear ended on the highway, etc. All concerns of some people over hitch racks vs roof mounts or inside. This also allows full ability for towing camper or whatever. It also doesn't rely on the low hanging stock tow hitch for a basic bike carrier which can easily hook up on even a decent urban curb cut/ drive inlet.
With the Kaymar, you already get the two redundant reverse lamps in the bumper and now, when covering up the main corners with multiple wheels of a bike, at least the bumper is totally in view by following cars and the bike wheels don't cover the rear corner lamps as bad as the spare did either.
My photos show the lean back version of the Thule however I returned that and just plan to use my swing away version that also mounts to the audi avant hitch.

Sorry I don't have a photo right here to see simply. If someone would like to let me know how or do it for me I can email them a few shots.
I really like having it closer in now though. It "looks" much better and has the safety functionality as well. 96 Disco I, 210,000 miles - still going strong

Why don't you post the photos.
I don't have a carrier but it sounded like a good idea. “There are only three sports: bullfighting, motor racing, and mountaineering; all the rest are merely gamesâ€

And the old bill would stop you here for that set-up.
Bike wheels class as an obstruction of the rear lights and turn indicators. Basically you may get a fine, but would have ot have a lightboard "To finish first, one first has to finish ...."

yup, (this was not shot with a "flash") the bumper lights are in fact fully functional, redundant of the main lights, turn, hazard, brake, fog, etc.
The other photo in my link shows it without the bike so you can really see the nice tire placement.
This set up also allows going almost anywhere the rover can go without hanging up on the bike wheels.
What this new thing has not helped with is my fuel mileage - 13mpg on the open highway! So, the jerry can is not just for looks, with a range of only 250 miles or so, the extra 5 gal is more than just in case. Mainly I just hate how often I have to stop on long trips. 96 Disco I, 210,000 miles - still going strong

Just worked it out, but IE closes when I open the page. “There are only three sports: bullfighting, motor racing, and mountaineering; all the rest are merely gamesâ€

Caver - I like the spare wheel winder mod Who the hell thought it a good idea to require both seats to go up in order to drop the spare?!!! A simple 90 degree pulley would have allowed us to drop it without removing anything from the cargo area or moving the seats. 96 Disco I, 210,000 miles - still going strong
