MY12 D4 Complete Steering Rack Failure!!!!

Has this happened to anybody else???
My wife was driving her D4 HSE on Sunday and lost all steering
Luckily she was only doing 5 mph, whilst pulling across a road, but she lost lost all steering in an instant.
I know I was following her, and we've had no problem beforehand.
Anyway the truck got carted away and has been repaired with a new steering rack system @ Marshall's.
They've told us that they've seen nothing like it before and Land Rover are taking it very seriously, as they should. God knows what would have happened if she was doing 70 down the motorway or coming up to a roundabout
Marshall's mentioned possibility of a recall depending on results of tests on parts failure.
Will keep you posted of any outcomes if anything comes of it.
Regards.

Sorry to hear about the breakdown!
i would imagine that if doing any speed the car would have thrown a hissy fit when the steering angle sensor figured you were going in the wrong direction for where it expected and instantly slowed the vehicle down into limp home mode. But all the same not too good a new vehicle and lucky SWMBO was only going slow

Was this replaced because you requested it or did LR want to keep the car?

When you say steering failed, do you mean that the wheel could be turned without it affecting the front wheels or that the steering went very heavey due to lose of all power steering fluid? If it was the second then at higher speeds you would probablly still be able to steer but with a lot of effort and difficulty, not ideal. However if it had been the first option, steering wheel turned with no affect on wheels then at high speed that would have been an accident in the making. Glad to hear all safe and sound and glad issue has been resolved.

Land rover replaced the Discovery after we rejected the vehicle.
The service from LR has been fantastic from start to finish, the only delay has been waiting for a new disco to be built.
Ours was replaced last week with 4500miles on the clock since mid march.
Only cost has been the Reg transfer fee.
Outstanding Service from Land Rover - Thankyou very much from a very loyal customer.

I had very good service of LR as well when they replaced mine.
Back to the question of the rack, what happened, complete lose of fluid or steering wheel turned but would not turn wheels.

If I remember correctly it was a loss of power steering fluid, that caused the loss, only when the truck was carted off to the dealers was it described as a complete internal failure, I can't say any different as I didn't get to see it.
I assume the internal failure caused the fluid loss that caused the steering loss.
I'm not small and I couldn't move steering at all.
All sorted for me, but I believe truck will be inspected and then resold from dealership.

Obviously depends on where you are, but this might be a reasonable place to post this little nugget of information...

How many of you know that you can safely apply the handbrake on a D4 at speed?

Before getting mine, I was invited to an event at Gaydon with all sorts of opportunities to play with vehicles before ending up on the high speed circuit and the runway...

"Take it up to 100 and when I tell you, stand on the brakes..." Shocked

Aaaargh... I gunna die....

Nope, not that time....

"Now take it up to 50 and I'm going to apply the handbrake... I want you to try and drive through it and keep going..."

Aaaargh, I'm gunna die and you're going to trash the car...

Nope... apparently the target audience is either going to work stupid hours and possibly fall asleep at the wheel or is (ahem...) of a certain age and may just suffer a heart attack. Cheerful soul really!

As such, part of their design process is that you can safely (as a passenger) pull the handbrake button which will stop the car from speed in a dead straight line should the need arise...
