MY15 LED headlight upgrade on MY11 problems
car is MY11 GS
I have three light settings off/sidelights/dipped
corresponding functionality is that the lights are off/ xenon strips and rear lights are on/ dipped headlights are on
I have no auto function and therefore no DLR albeit I can get the illusion I do by running with sidelights on all the time.
the problem is I can only high beam flash (ie to let people out etc) when the lights are on - can't do it when lights are off or sidelights are on.
1) is this an MOT fail?
2) how do I fix it?

I have a D3 which I purchased with MY15 lights already fitted and have a similar issue. Lights off, side lights light the LED DRLs, Headlights light up the headlights etc. I also have no flash unless the headlights are on. I also don't get the DRL's dimming when the indicators are on. Mine are genuine LR parts and have been fitted very well.
I have no idea who did the conversion to ask them so I wonder if anyone has an answer for this?2008 XS Java Black

So far as I can find, there's nothing in the Road Vehicles Lighting Regulations or ECE Regulation 98 (which covers gas discharge headlamps) to state that there must be the ability to flash the main beam.
The reason you aren't getting the flash is that on a D3 or original D4, you have the HID burner, shutter, and halogen bulb. The HID burner is ignited with the dipped beam, and the other two are activated by the main beam switch. Thus, even if the lights are off, the halogen lamps with still work (and with the lights on, both will flash).
The 14MY lights don't have the halogen lamps (all in aid of reducing power use, at the expense of beam intensity ), so on the correct vehicle, the burner would be activated along with the shutter, but in your case, the main beam signal is provided only to the shutters - so the shutters activate but the burners aren't lit. To correct it you need to get power to the burners when you trigger the flash. You could use a two way relay on the dipped beam feed (triggered by the main beam) to do it or tapping into the flash feed from the stalk and triggering the dipped beam at the light switch would be another option.
