Doesn't just happen to D3's - passed a chap in an X3 last week who'd got to where the packed snow turned to tarmac and a wheel had stopped spinning and the driveshaft hadn't...
Did offer him a tow but he said BMW assist were already on their way. Shame really - would have made a good photo

No you wont as all the drive/power will take the easy route which is the broken HS as there is no resistance.In the Beginning there was nothing, which exploded.
