Painting interior bits : have you done it ?

Hi boys and girls

thinking of changing the look of the light grey bits on the D3 : at least the dashboard side vents, the H center console surround, possibly the steering grey bits too, then why not the center lower console and the inside door handle.

my point is for that kid of money one deserves a better finish that the stock plain grey plastic.

our D3 is used off road and for Raids so i am not here for walnut finish or Ferrari red

i d like to know if one of you guys has ever gone that way and finish it all in silver or better in flat black / matt black or exterior color if chawton / zambezi / bonati or java etc.

seeing how the piano black lives on the FFRR TDV8, i want something sturdy and not glossy like that (finger prints are a mess after a couple of days).

anyway, i look forward to read your feedback on this, as i did not find anything on the forum yet

cheerio

Greetings,

Years ago I had to replace a plastic bit in another car. The replacement part only came in black so the dealership had to paint it grey to match my interior. The paint did not adhere to the plastic very well and in short time started to peel off.

I suppose if the plastic had a proper coat of primer the paint would stay put.

To be honest with you I would be hesitant to try this.

Try it in a small spot first and see how it goes.

Best of luck!

....Most of the rigid

..Plastic in a vehicle is painted anyway...even if its a textured finish to make all the panels match up when they are side to side they are spray painted with a two pack paint which needs to be dried in a tunnel oven.
Even though the plastic parts are made from the same plastic chip the actual processes vary across the machines, mold tools & some times different suppliers factories. The resulting finish is quite durable. I have seen parts for VDO (FFRR), Nissan, Land Rover (inc D3 parts), Toyota, Jaguar, BMW Mini, Rover, Ford all receiving this treatment.
I could ask a colleague (who still works at one of the plants) what type of paint it is they use, the skills I saw used was getting the actual application of the matte & semi matte finish to be even using a mixture of hand spray (quite a skill) & paint spray robot to match. A good paint spray user could get the same finish.
 BREXIT - done properly.

That is interesting BLFarrar, thank you for posting it. I was not aware that most of the plastic was painted. In my case the dealership (GM Pontiac car) informed me that the plastic bit had to be sent to the body shop to be painted. Not exactly factory finish I suppose Wink

I was not exactly happy about the outcome because they broke the piece in the first place!

Possibly....

the worst bit of any vehicle that the company I worked for produced was for the Mini convertible...
On the head rear seat head rests below the chromed plastic part is a two part black plastic thing that seem to defy all the attempts we made at trying to make the front bit match the back bit....the slight difference in the texture of the molded part altered the colour of the paint we applied. I never saw one that matched.
The Mini interior plastic parts I saw made were the worst we produced - the tools that were used were absolute garbage & caused us to do lots of repairs just to keep them operational - the tools were made from substandard metal & the pre machined castings had flaws which caused lots of cooling water leakage.
Realise that a mold tool for a volume vehicle interior part is a very high cost item - maybe 20 to 30 tons of special steel made in two halves (Fixed & moving) - each tool has the impression of one specific trim item (& this has to cover all the variations of the vehicle) - then there is LHD & RHD.
This is the reason why interior plastic trim isn't changed or face lifted - the one exception I saw was the change of the Freelander dash - this was done using a "topper" - another molding fastened to the top of the original, which means the original parts & new style parts are made with very little extra tooling cost.
 BREXIT - done properly.

Done properly it should be good, but the risk would be the paint will wear on the bits you make regular contact with.

Correct, this is why i am taking it to a proper paintshop (they do repairs for the LR dealership next door amont other stuff, including some "tunning" painting (not that it si a plus, but they care about the job being properley done.)

I decided to paint my trims as per the original piano black set.
i.e gloss black side vents and gloss black/silver H trim.

To reduce the paint edge between the black and silver on the H trim the silver was applied first then the full trim lacquered.
The trim was then "keyed" with a scotch pad and masked for the black base to be applied. This was then unmasked and fully lacquered again with the result having little step between the two colours.

The Two side panels were just scotch padded, black base coated, and lacquered

That black looks really good Discolee.

What type of paint did you use and where did you buy it from?

That black looks great - couple questions - Tonga Green?

I have been thinking about doing this on my 05 HSE as well -- exactly what you did. My exterior is Tonga Green, interior is the Alpaca/Black combo just like yours.

What do you think the Tonga Green might look like? I think it might look VERY cool... but am not totally sure. You think I should do black or the green?

And did you have it pro painted or did you do it yourself with spray cans?

They were painted in standard automotive basecoat and 2k lacquer the same as whats on a car body
Its very durable and once fully dry will take the odd knock etc
I work in a paintshop so had all the required spray booths/ drying ovens etc required for a professional finish

nashvegas, IMO Tonga Green and silver split would look 8) Thumbs Up
