Radio interference - alternator ?

I'm in France at present (North Brittany), and like to listen to the BBC on AM on the D3 radio.

With my D2 this was easy, and reception was reasonably good.

With the D3 it's OK without the engine running, but not as good as the D2.

With the engine running there is considerable interference, which is related to the engine RPM - I assume that as the car is diesel this must be coming from the alternator.

There is no interference on FM.

Thoughts please?

The car is a couple of months old, will LR fix the problem under guarantee?

I had a refrigerator (forget the brand) that did the same thing (sold the fridge). Do you have anything else plugged in which energises when the engine starts (or when the ignition is turned "ON")? I was later told that some fridge motors cause interference, particularly as the D3 radio antenna is on the side rear window. A power inverter, to charge my laptop, also does the same thing.

Thanks DingMark - no nothing other than TomTom GPS which clearly isn't at fault.

Perhaps you have tinted windows that include a metallic film element? If so, they reduce the efficiency of the antenae, therefore making it a weak signal more often. You only get the altenator interference when the radio signal is weak? That's the case for me.
I had a chat to the dealer, but I think the answer is basically tough. Works fine with strong and medium signals, only is a problem with faint ones. I did think about installing a more serious, roof mounted antenae to improve signal strength, therefore reducing the extent to which the head unit ramps up its sensitivity (whih is what creates the problem).

Thanks Mr Andrew - I fear you may be correct.

What is annoying is that my diesel D2, which like my D3 has heated front & rear screens, received a clear signal with no interference when parked in the same spot.

I had a similar problem - it turned out to be the rear LED bulbs I'd added from Ultra LEDs.

One of the bulbs would cause complete radio interference when lit - either when braking or when exterior lights were on.

Just another thing to check ...

Cheers,
Rob.
