I know it as bit late - but just reading through this - looks like you were indeed very lucky Dunc - afterall, its only a bit of metal, and you can replace that - as long as you are yours are safe.

well, big relief... Land Rover Insurance offered me a good market price for the CatC Write off and Ive bought the Salvage back off them. Should get the D3 home in a few weeks
new D4 arrives next week and we have just (today) bought a 2010 Freelander2 GS
so back to a 2 x Land Rover family Duncan

So sorry i did not notice this post earlier, i get so little time to surf as i would like these days.
Your survival of such a possibly horric incident may well have been largely down to being in a D3, but from reading your initial post i think a lot also seems down to your quick thinking and cool headedness.
Any amount of metal can always be replaced, what truly matters is that you and your family are well.
Nothing else really matters at all
