RIP D3 , RIP Sankey
Well, what was supposed to be a great 3 weeks camping holiday down to our apartments in Murcia, Spain ; turned out to be a bit of a pain when we crashed just outside Senlis, north of Paris 2 hours after entering France !
around midnight, hit something in the road, possibly a lorry tyre, and left the carriageway at 60mph with cruise control on. Hit a metal roadsign, then obliterated the huge green chevron bollard thing, over a concrete post and jumped 6 feet into the field/slip road central reservation - all with a 1500kgs Sankey attached.
as we did a Dukes of Hazard jump into the grass all I could think of was "keep it straight or the Sankey will roll over and might take the car with it. Managed to keep it straight and stopped, only to find the sankey had flipped 180 degrees and was still attached to the car (upside down) but the top had seperated from the tub and all the camping gear was scattered over the grass reservation along with an 11kg gas bottle that was expelling gas in the moon light (look quite impressive)
lucky to be alive really - it could have been a lot worse especially if there had been some of ther steel barriers , gulleys, water resevoirs or trees that seemed to be at every other slip road we saw.
just a few aches and bruises from air bags etc.
Sankey is a write off, and i think the car may well be too. LR Insurance are towing it home for assessment.
currently in Spain with a Vauxhall Zafira which was the best the AA could do so most of our stuff is still in the D3.
I reckon the chassis is twisted as the drivers door made a lot of creaking noises and wont close, neither will the rear drivers side door or the upper tailgate.
no tyres burst and the car runs and drives , supprisingly there arent any error messages either, but the suspension look a bit down on the front where we landed !! but that might be because I cant adjust adjust it because the doors wont close. well impressed with the D3 though - just like offroading but a lot, lot faster...

unfortunatly because the Sankey wasnt insured fully comp, I need to cover the cost of the recovery from the motorway and ive lost the trailer, batteries and alloys as the AA or LR insurance wont recover to UK as the recovery is deemed and uneconomical.
just pleased that we are all OK (inc Poppy who was a bit frightened and is still a bit jumpy),but more so that no one else was involved and the trailer stayed attached to the car
will have to see what the insurance have to say when we get back.
Oh, to RLD - as you can see his alloy battery box is totally undamaged and looks like new Duncan

thanks,
despite it all I do feel lucky - it could quite have easily been a fatal accident either us or a third party - dont think i'll be using cruise control too often in the future
we have still got a few bruises but thats all Duncan

Good god, at least you're here to tell us. I wish you all a speedy recovery. Remember it's only metal, and the Landrover has saved you as lesser cars would be a different story.

Crikey Dunc Glad you are all OK, you are very lucky, go and buy lottery tickets.
Can we not get one of our French contingent to help out with the Sankey?
