Spare wheel winch seized

Had to change a wheel and wind the winch back up to move the car. Winch then seized and will not come down. A new winch is being flown in as a replacement! Anybody had that problem?

I have only ever seen one spare wheel winch failure and this wasn't due to being seized-

The cable got tangled in mine, trying to wind out with no wheel on caused it to bunch up inside the mechanism.

I had to pull the cable very hard indeed to free it off.

I used a bungi cord with a hook last time to keep the tension, so I didn't have to faf about under the car more than I had to .. just me being lazy I guess, but sounds like it was worth it so as not to get it tangled ..

Spare wheel winch seized

The worst part for me is that there is no spare part winch in Australia. Mine is coming from the UK. I'm a bit sick of carrying the spare in the back!

Mine did this yesterday. Pain in the ar$e.
Looks like it bunched up and has kinked - I've managed to get it to extend again but has stuck and won't fully retract. Spent a happy 30 minutes in the snow trying to get it sorted yesterday, to the annoyance of my wife who needed all 7 seats for a long trip, and didn't like the idea of having the spare in the boot.

I guess it's a trip to the dealer...

There are a number of nuts which look tempting to remove- although I'm going to resist as I can imagine the whole lot will cascade out and never go back!

Just had a puncture and swapped for spare. Looks like the first time it's ever been changed. Now I can't wind the new spare back up under the car. It's goes so far and then stops with the winder making a ratchet noise. Nothings jammed as the wheel's still swinging about 5" down.

I can unwind the cable again and all seems OK until the same point - about 5" short with the wheel still swinging. I've tried it about 10 times now, close to giving up...

Yawn

Any idea's before it goes dark?

Thanks for the link - I missed that thread when I searched.
Looks like I'm down to the dealers tomorrow morning for a bit of warranty work.
Because of the gear I carry in the boot it means I can't have a spare.
I've done well though - it's the first real problem I've had...

I had the same problem once. I parked over a locked gully and used a ratchet strap to pull the wheel down as i lowered the winch. worked fine since. had it down twice with no problems

Just got back from those very helpful people at Guava in Guildford. They looked at it immediately and decided it was indeed knac*ered. It's a sealed unit and the cable feels like it's somehow got tangled up inside. Will be replaced under warranty on Wednesday while I wait. (v.quick job apparently - just four bolts!)

I'll be a bit nervous of using it without the weight of a wheel on the cable again.

I must say I've had nothing but great service from Guava - top blokes.

Thumbs Up

How do Guava compare price wise Paul? Or have you only used them for warranty work?
