Think you will find its connected to the lights.
If a cigarette lighter is fitted there is normally a light bulb at the back.

Yep,
Used to illuminate the surround on the smokers pack right hand socket.

I can also confirm that's the case.
I've been in behind there tonight to tap into the ciggy lighter power to switch the relay for my roof basket spots.

Well, I just used it as the "illumination" signal for the aftermarket GPS/stereo head unit that I fitted (ie, it tells the display to dim when headlights are active)
