Spot lights front and roof mount

Hi

Im in need of some help. Im thinking of purchasing 6x , 5" Wipac spots and I have a few questions.

(1) is 5" big enough what do others use
(2) how to mount in front of the grill , what brackets do i use
(3) how to mount roof spots, without spending a fortune on a roof box, whats my cheapest and best option,

I think i should be ok with wiring, id wire the fronts into the high beem and then the roofs into a relay and swithch on the inside, with 100w bulbs.

As much help as possible would be appretiated

Oh and i have not roof track just the rubber thingy, can i get a thule kit (universal)

there are a few ways of putting lights on the front - bumper mount, recessed in the grill, or on a bracket that pokes through the grill (thereby negating the need to drill into the bumper).

I tried to go the recessed route but changed in the end to a bracket the pokes through the grill.




The roof is going to be more problematic if you do not have a roof rack


You could maybe make up (or ask someone - maybe Ray/RLD...?) to make a light bar that can be bolted into the front roof section where the expo/front runner rack would be supported ? This is a bar for the D1 that I saw. But nothing for the D3...


(P.S. do you have bi-xenon lights...? if yes, then wipacs probably won't make too big a difference...?)

cheers mate that is a massive massive help for the front spots.

i've just read a thread on thule foot packs that bolt into the front unsure what kit, but by the sounds dont need the tracks.

i dont have xeons unfortunatly, what size spots are yours, looks 8) thats the look im after.

ps, what size lamps are yours

they are Lightforce LF170 Strikers - 173mm / 7 inch

and whenever the roof rack is on I don't park in underground/multi-story car parks... Laughing

CG, do you know if this rack clears the fin antenna if fitted? From their pics, it's not too clear as their demo car has the blanking plate on the roof...

Also, how do people thread the wire to the roof lights ensuring water tightness at the roof exit?

From where did you obtain the brackets?

I note the third photo shows a different bracket to the first and second. Which style is preferable?

Brackets are the straight forward bits of metal you get from any DIY store for putting wooden fencing together.

I have the L-shaped bracket behind the grill. Then bolted on a flat metal plate. Since the picture has been taken I have moved the plate back so the hole you see is now bolted to the L-bracket. The lights rest nice and tight against the grill and there is less over-hang.

I'm sure it's possible to adjust it all so that the bracket comes out under the grill (I opted for a small cut-out).

I don't get much shake at all. Having the cut-out also provides some support. When I get round to it I will cut a small tube to fit under the light and resting on the bumper to give more rigidity.

My cables run the length of the roof rack. Two cable pairs left and right. Then down the channel either side of the tailgate, behind the rear light clusters. The right hand cables then run under rear compartment into the left cubby hole where it all meets and is attached to a Blue Marine power distribution board. From there I have one cable run along the inside of the vehicle as part of the Traxide set-up.

I have plugs on the cables that seperate halfway up the tailgate channel so I can take off the roof rack.

So the cables are thin enough to go in the channels and behind the light clusters without creating gaps that water can sip through? (what gauge cable did you use?) I guess this way is much better than running them under the roof liner inside and having to drill extra holes...

Thanks - you must get far more substantial fencing over there - brackets we are offered look little better than bean tins!

I took delivery of 8" spots for the front today, do o need an in line fuse if feeding into high beem. And once I wire up the 4 5" spots on the roof do I need only 1 inline fuse from positive to relay

Yes to the fuses. I have each pair fused. All 3 pairs run via a relay as well.

And if you are wiring to the main beam they must be switched - i.e. they cannot come on at the same time as the main beam unless you switch them on separately. Especially if 100w as I believe 55w is the road-legal limit.

All mine are switched so I can have any combination of 2, 4 or 6 being on with the main beam (or off even if the main beam is on). Of course...I coincidentally happened to have 3x 3-way switches to hand so I can have them on independently off of the auxiliary battery as well... Whistle

have you got a simple diagram for the front spots and then the roof.

I have a relay and some in line fuse would these be ok
