Suspension and Compressor issue - 3rd in 4 years???

Hi I wonder if group has any suggestions

I have seen a lot of the Compressor replacement and maintenance posts but 3 dead ones?

I have a D3 07 that has been really good and has over 200 K miles on it. A couple of years ago the compression went and was replaced by an Landy specialist, it then went again 18 months later, and now the 2nd replacement appears to have gone.

SO I'm following some of the guidance on the forum with the first replacement, which is a dunlop.

I find it hard to beleive its the compressor, the original did about 14 years and 200 K. These last two have lasted less than 2 years and done maybe 10 K miles.

The one in it was an after market I got from Germany on line and is a Hitachi.

Could there be something else that is making the compressors over work and hence fail in some way.

If I overhaul the Dunlop I have on the bench and fit it, which will be a major exercise for me as I ahve not done anything like this for 20 years, will the errors auto clear and only if there is still a compressor fault will it error?

You may have an air leak, if you do the compressor runs more often to try and keep the system pressure correct. Check your air tank as they are often corroded and get pin holes in.

OK thanks. I will look for any guidance on the forum for that fault.

The front did keep dropping but has been good for a while. Although the car is on it bump stops now.

More than likely a leak on the system causing the compressor to run all the time and leading to premature failure of the compressor. Need to find and repair the leak and replace the compressor Thumbs Up

If there’s no leaks the compressor should last years…my current compressor on my D3has done 110k miles and 10years. Could do with replacing it as it’s become a little noisy, but it still runs as it should at present Thumbs Up

The noise may be that the rubber bushings the compressor sits on need replacing so you’re heating the vibration from the compressor because it’s not being isolated by the bushings. Worth taking the lower over off for a look.

It might be worth programming your spare key to run the air suspension off the third button- it’s easy to do and can help you test for leaks whilst the car is on ramps or axle stands - only need your hazard lights on to run the pump without the engine running- it’s much easier to listen for leaks

Hi Darrind,

Sorry how do you program the spare key to do this, do I need to go to a specialist to do this.

Are you aware of a link on disco3 to do this?

I was wondering how I can keep the compressor going beyond 30 seconds. I was imagine I'd have to manually pressurise the system.....

Use the soapy water test to find leaks. If you have not replaced the seals in the valve blocks it might be time to consider doing this.

How to run a compressor on a bench to check it is OK

Hi, I have the compressor off and surpress it looks very new, and quite easy after a dozen video reviews.

WERA rachet spanners are great.

But now I have compressor off the car, is there an easy way to test it running which all the Disco electronics to switch it off. I just could not get it running for more than 30 seconds to do any soapy water tests.

I have a full service kit for the old dunlop compressor but once I do that how do I know its OK?

With it off, there is a cable with just a black and red cable in the connector. This is the 12v supply to the compressor. apply power to this connector will run the compressor. Do not run it too long so that it gets hot.

Air tank off and it had pressure

Hi guys, I have taken the air tank off, and like much of the underside it really is quite good.

The tank had air pressure in it, surely that is an indication that is not leaking? Or is that optimism!

I can't fully washing liquid test the system as it is at its lowest point, even getting a jack under is fun.

Is it time to assume after a refurb of the compressor with the same error, too slow to pressure up, it needs a new compressor?

Once up I could double check all the air lines and joints, to make sure I don't blow another compressor.

Or following a US guys suggestion, tap each of the lines and pressurise the system after the value blocks?
