Land Rover Discovery 4 3.0 TDV6 - Crankshaft kanckered....
Hi all
Down in France with my Disco 4 at the moment and very briefly I had a knock coming from the engine that very quickly turned it to it grinding and stopping. Have had a local mechanic look at it and tried to manually turn it over but he says that the crank has gone.
So it looks like I need a new engine for this car and have been looking on line for solutions. This forum seemed like a good place to start. I have been in contact with a few companies who can offer the service and have seen that there might be some to avoid... Anyone got a reasonable recommendation of who to use at a reaosnable cost as don't want to have to spend £10k or so as some have suggested...
Cheers!

No problem getting touch, just a problem in getting through them quick enough

Thank you to all for getting back to me - very kind!
I have recovery insurance in place so hopefully will be getting the car back to the UK but just need to try and sort out where it is going before then...
Disco Mikey - hopefully this post will allow me to send a PM now and we can go from there.
Thanks again all of you and will keep informed of where this is up to.
Did anyone out there get any further with Land Rover on this issue which has been discussed on earlier forums? I have contacted Land Rover customer services quoting this reference to them and the chap I spoke to says this brings up nothing their end...

Unfortunately getting anything out of LRCS is a complete and utter lottery. Full LR dealer service history will help, but is even then not a guarantee. What's the mileage? I see from profile a 2010 car. We had someone on here recently with engine going bang at 39k miles.

Do you have a warranty? and if so is it a main dealer warranty (i'll assume not due to the age of the car).
I was in this situation last December, had a 2010 on 82k miles that went bang, I took it to an independent LR specialist and tried my best with LRCS to get some sort of contribution but they were awful with me, contrary to taking weight off the situation for me they actually made it much more stressful, spoke to me and treated me like a second class citizen I can only assume because I had a 6 year old car that I hadn't bought from a main dealer.
Anyway, after weeks of wrangling with LRCS and the shoddy warranty company who both wriggled out of contributing anything other than more stress to an already stressful situation, I had the car taken to my local LR dealer who were instantly more helpful. From memory they instantly managed to get a 25% discount on the price of an engine from LR, but other than that their hands were tied.
I looked into various options from £4k ebay jobbies which included fitting, to buying a jag engine and having it fitted by a known specialist on here etc, but I was very uneasy about parting with thousands of pounds to end up with a unknown second hand engine in a car that had no warranty.
In the end I resorted to part-exing the duff D4 for a 2014 from my main dealer who were able to give me a very good price in part ex considering the fact that the car needed a new engine. That meant that I didn't have to fork out £13k+ to fix the broken one and I could just drive off with a newer model covered by the LR full warranty for two years, which after a couple of months with no car and the stress of having to stump up £13k to fix a car worth £20k to then have no warranty etc going forward, was the best way out of the situation for me, and meant I had peace of mind with the newer D4 as it was covered by LR's warranty.
Hope you manage to find a solution asap, it's not a nice situation to be in.
Sorry to hear about your troubles Bob, that really sucks.
What mileage is your vehicle on, and was it serviced at LR? If so, you may want to look into approaching LR for a goodwill claim.--

OMG - look at the photograph on the WMS Group website; would you buy anything from either of these people
I can't even work out which is the salesman & which the satisfied customer
