I think the worst Part is removing the clips on the ends. I slipped yesterday with a tiny screwdriver. Ouch.

Hi, What happened about the lower tailgate cable please? Is this the P38 Range Rover cable? I keep getting referred to a cable on a spool. The one I have lost is for a D3 2005 strong black metal cable about 19 inches long. Where did you manage to buy one?
Cheers,

If the wire isn't actually damaged but is a little unsightly, I'd be inclined to remove from the tailgate and slip over a bit of heat shrink.

Thanks, but ...On googling the part number, I still get an image of a spool. I have lost a 19 inch long black metal supporting cable. The LH is still there, but the right disappeared on a long journey home. I didn't notice it was loose. Probably fell off and out when I put shopping in the boot and I didn't notice! Mine is obviously an early model, could LR have replaced the straight, but flexible cable, with a spool/reel system on newer models? I have seen photos of RR versions which look similar, but I don't know if the bolts/bolt holes will be identical. Cheers.

The cable you are after is supplied wrapped around the spool. You change the whole spool and cable assembly.
When you close the lower tailgate the cable wraps up around the spool.06 D3 SE / 15 LR D90 XS SW / 88 LR 90 Td5 / 68 BMW 2000 ti

Hi Martin
Yes, I understand the newer versions have a spool, mine doesn't, so I was wanting a replacement for just the cable. However it seems they don't make part no. BHF780022 anymore, so I shall have to buy the newer version and hope the bolts fit. I am unsure how the spool is fixed to the interior trim; there are obviously no existing bolt holes.
Cheers, John Mellor

All D3s have a spooled lower tailgate retaining cable.
BHF780022 is superceded by BHF780040, this was changed part way through 2007 model year production.
So BHF780022 would be fitted to a 2006 model year car such as my own one, which is fitted with a spool.
I wonder if yours has been modified to remove the spool. Can you provide a photo?06 D3 SE / 15 LR D90 XS SW / 88 LR 90 Td5 / 68 BMW 2000 ti

I can't think why anyone would want to remove a spool and replace it with a simple cable. I suspect the early models all had the cable like mine, perhaps from a Range Rover, and a new system was developed for later Discoveries. Both left and right cables are not really intrusive and don't waste load space. As the tailgate is closed, the cable simply loops against the side of the trim. I think on this site someone mentioned they'd anchored a bungee strap to theirs, which obviously caused some distress. I wonder how he managed to replace his cable.
I have never sent a photo with a message on here. I shall read the instructions and try.
Cheers.

There is something odd here as the parts catalogue shows no such thing:

"<0606" is the label for the spool part. There's no non-spooled cable.
I think you may have one (two?) jammed spools?06 D3 SE / 15 LR D90 XS SW / 88 LR 90 Td5 / 68 BMW 2000 ti
