should a D3 start with a tow
d3 not starting, but can get ignition lights.
decided to put a tow rope on it to see if it would start
on bringing up the clutch there seems to be no compression in the engine. as it does not drag the tow car down
is this normal

You should use another vehicle and jump leads, the D3 relies heavily on the electronics and would need to do a system 'start up' otherwise (IMHO) the engine will be immobilised along with other critical systems to allow the engine to start
(Unless anyone says different )Never get mad - get even !!
06 D3 now gone to family member and still going strong at 265k

I have successfully bump started my manual D3 once in the past, I needed be towed to about 10mph and then lift the clutch pedal and turn the key at the same time - took a few attempts to master it and it didn't feel like it was doing the vehicle much good at all - have since bought a decent set of jump leads which live in the boot 24/7. This of course has prevented me from getting a flat battery ever again
