check the water pump as well. Maybe the impeller has rusted and some tabs have broken off

start car with a cool engine

if you turn the air con on and off (press ECO), you could notice a fan speed change
which will give you confidence its working

These use a thermostatic fan that runs when temp is up make sure that's happening. Try and stop the fan with a roll of newspaper - if it stops you have a problem.

The PCM decides when the fan needs to run, and can be engaged anything between 1-100% duty cycle

Just because you can stop the fan doesn't mean it's broken

After 2 months after having my LR3 i was on trip to north and i decided to stop and have a sleep in car next morning it was freezing 4 degrees i started the car to get my self hot after about 15 min the neddle started to move a fraction then all of the sudden shot up to red and light and warning soun came on so i turnd off the engine and back on and whent to its normal half way turn engine of and on again and was quarter of the way up then i notice when i drove off i noticed the car was smoking quit lot i eased off the throttle and it stoped. So bit worried as to what it could be going to red when engine iddle for only 15-20 min
