Oil on Crossmember Below Gearbox
Hi
I noticed there was a small oil patch on the drive last week, so thought I would check both cars to see if any oil was evident - unfortunately, nothing glaringly obvious, so I monitored over the last week.
I looked under the disco again today, whereby I can now see oil over the crossmember below the back of the gearbox, so I removed the protection tray to see the sump etc.
Although I can see there is definitely an oil leak (nothing major), it is not very easy to determine where exactly the oils coming from. The oil is concentrated at the back of the sump fins only, and goes up the sides - which I assume is due to the air travelling over this area as we drive. There is what also looks like an electrical socket of some kind on the back to the gearbox which has oil on it.
With the above, has anyone any idea on which is the best area to look for the leak?
I assume it will be a new sump or sump seal either way, but as it is going into the dealers next week for it's next service, I wanted to get more understanding on what I am going to be faced with here.
Kind regards
Jay

Photos would help but turbo hoses are a common source too.Land Rover - Turning Drivers into Mechanics Since 1948

Check your engine sump has not gone porous with corrosion for a start. As mine did and oil was all over the base of the gearbox and cross member. Eventually had a massive puddle of oil in the drive way. If it is the sump it is about a hundred quid and easy to do yourself.D3 TDV6 S MY2005

Assuming you are talking about oil on the offside rear of the gearbox, from the autobox wiring and leaking down onto the sump pan . It is most likely the little sleeve with o rings on around the wiring. To release the sleeve it needs the autobox sump to come off, so sump/filter, oil change and new sleeve are needed.

Hi,
Sump looks clean and dry, so hopefully not that.

Hi
If sump needs to come off to repair that part (if it is linked to this), it will be a landrover job due to time constraints. Another big big bill.

Spraying the area with talc is a good method of finding the exact source but looking at your pictures it looks like Steve Norman got it straight away and not for the first time either.

The leak is no drama and whilst the parts are available separately ZF produce a handy overhaul kit that aims to replace all the seal that perish after 5 to 10 years.

No hurry with the work as the leak rate looks quite slow.

Hi
Would the oil not be seen running down from higher up the gearbox if it were the coolers? Just for reference, do you have any photos of the state of the oil leak prior to repair so I can see how yours was?
