Shock Absorbers / Dampers |
|
How do you know when they need changing ?
Mine has no clonks, all ARB bushes, wishbone bushes, Inner & outer tie rods, Lower Steering shaft etc etc have been done, on a flat road it drives as true as anything.
A small pothole and it seems to crash a bit as though there is no shock absorption, and it does seem to have a degree of bodyroll that I don't recall 5 years ago
I am happy to take one off and test it, but how do you d that....should they compress easily, not at all, or something in between ? Will it be obvious that they are past their best ?
How do they normally fail ? do they go hard or soft
Happy to change all 4 if required, but I don't want to shell out for no improvement

Many Thanks

if you have one 75,000 of 2.7 tonne bounching on you you would like to be replaced from almost 10 year ago, I have done the front and away to do the rear a they are ridding hard and I can feel far more road from the rear.
cant really say nything more than that as the gas strut will just be worn out and tired.
easy test jack it up for at least half an hour, then lower the car and go for a drive, does it feel smoother fr first 5 miles or so, then the piston in the shock has all the oil under its seal again and is kinda working so too speak!

I've just replaced both fronts on mine and it has transformed the car, the front seemed to crash badly in smallish potholes but the car now rides straight over anything.
I am the same as Rob and next stop is the rears, I did contemplate just shocks but glad I replaced both shock and airbag as mileage had taken it's toll...
Towing was also showing signs of pitching about aswell.

Were they easy enough to replace DIY or did you get somebody else to do it? Did you fit Delphi or Dunlop replacements? What mileage had your D3 covered before you replaced them?
I'm thinking of replacing mine at the same time as I do the front upper arms.

I've just replaced all four air shocks on mine.
Dunlop front / Delphi rear - all in cost £640 from a local guy under AllMakes PR2 name.
Easy to do - patience is your best tool - you'll need 24mm (deep) socket or ring spanner, 21m socket or spanner, 15mm spanner, 12mm spanner (I cut an old one in half to get better access), breaker bar, torque wrench capable of 300nm, stands, trolley jack, decent penetrating oil (I used 'Super Crack Ultra' - yes really...).
Not sure what a dealer would charge to do the work.
Mine's done 117,000 including off-road.
Much happier bunny now I see no ships........

The fronts are Dunlop, Steve at AF got them to me next day and I think they were roughly £150 a pop. The job is pretty easy and as usual allow 1.5 hours for the first and 45 mins for the next....
Have a look through the forum for tips but I just pulled the fuse and released pressure from the front valve block. There is a good video on youtube if you have problems or are unsure.

Thanks all for the responses
Sounds like a no brainer while it is in bits
To those that have replaced, was there any significant difference in trying to compress the strut, off the car ?
Or is it still so stiff when its shot that you cant tell
