I've read that the standard LR M+S tyres as fitted are 80-90% as good in the snow as a dedicated winter tyre (in which case why have a special winter set?) but has anyone done a comparison ?
Wow, that would have to be a compelling bit of evidence to overcome all the evidence to the contrary. Do you have a source for that statistic?

As I said, I read it online some time ago - some car mag website, sorry can't remember which.
I wasn't talking about comparing winter and summer tyres (per your graphic) but M+S tyres with winter tyres.
My understanding (and please prove me wrong ) is that they are a hybrid - not quite as good in the summer as a summer tyre, but a lot better than a summer tyre in the winter. Question is, how close to a true winter tyre are they ?

But that compares winter tyres v 4WD. Not winter tyres v M+S tyres.

For summer read M+S (aka all season as it is the tread pattern alone that drives the M+S rating, not the temperature dependant compound) - you do not get pure summer tyres in the UK outside of a special order.

Going in circles here but the web is not short of tyre comparisons. The video is useful as it shows where 4-wheel drive helps and when it has no effect (ie braking and cornering). The 4WD vehicle is fitted with regular M+S marked all season tyres. My thought was that this is the very scenario you were advocating as you have a 4WD vehicle, but it only seems to have confused.

About to enter the fifth year shod with Vredesteins, three years I with a Freelander 2 and second year with the Disco, great, just drive as normal in the snow, within reason.

Can't decide which tyres to go for.
I've used winter tyres for the past few years.
Started with a set for my Mercedes Vito van, got a set of Hankooks for it, which were very good. I kept them on all year to see of they did indeed as some people will tell you, fall apart in the summer, but they were fine and still worked great the following winter. In all I put 40,000 miles on them and when they were changed they would still be legal for several more miles, but were past usefulness as a winter so I changed them for Nokians. These also lasted 40,000 miles and were still good when I sold the Vito to buy my D3.
I've also had a set of Nokians on my Impreza, which makes a fantastic combination, only limitation is the ground clearance, you could end up beached on very deep snow. I've been so impressed with the Nokina winters I bought Nokian summers for the Impreza as well, and they have been great. Good in wet and dry, no issues.
So as a 'fan' of winter tyres and Nokian in particular I am tempted to try a set of WRG3SUV's on the D3.
