Rear Alloy wheel wear
Hello there. I was wondering if anyone has seen this before. I did a search and couldn't find anything. While having a new set of tyres fitted yesterday, we noticed that my rear wheels looked like this

The inner edge of the wheel has been worn away. Both the rears were like this. The chap who did the tyres ( a landy specialist ) said he has seen this quite a few times on models with independent suspension like disco3/4 and rangerover sport. Wondering if you guys had seen this before.
My D3 is 58 plate, about 72k miles on. tows occasionally, and checked regulary. Set of grabber ATs went on, to replace the set coming off. Asking about facebook a bit yesterday seems to indicate that its the tyre itself rubbing away the edges ( the metal wire around the tyre lip )
Any thoughts or experience with this would help. Thanks guys

Forgot to mention, tyre wear on the backs was pretty even. No shoulders scrubbed out or anything

It is caused by a combination of dirt getting in between the tyre and wheel rim, and the tyre moving On the rim, which wears it away
Seem to happen on the rear wheel mostly, and from what I have seen, with grabber ATs. Whether this is because they tend to be used off road, I can't say...

As per Mikey but from what I have seen on other vehicles it is a combination of the tyre construction and the shape of the original wheel rather than driving off-road per se. The at-risk combinations leave enough of a void for an abrasive paste to form. This appears to do little damage if the alloy surface is intact, but once the lacquer is compromised it seems to eat through the soft alloy at an alarming rate. There have been some blow-outs caused by this.
If Grabber ATs leave this void I would think that the chances of the initial rimdamage must be increased by off-road use but beyond this point normal road grime and moisture are enough to produce the abrasive paste. The wheel shape makes this much more likely on the inner rim (I have never seen it on the outer rim yet, others may have) and go unnoticed for longer.
A subtlety different tyre and wheel combination should prevent reoccurrence. Really glad this was caught on a tyre change rather than suffering a surprising accident. Clearly do not use the compromised wheels.

I'm actually quite glad to read this post.
When I first got ours the passenger rear had the inner edge completely worn away and it was like a knife. I had assumed it had been drivin with a flat. I had 3 wheels with varying degrees of wear. On the worst one the tyre seemed fine but I you had run you finger along it you would have sliced it.
My mate said it must have been used in a raid and the police stopped it with stingers
Ours had some cheapo Nexens on it but I don't know if that damage had been done before that set.IID PRO

tyre guy reckons it will be good for this set, but do obviously monitor to see if they drop. I will be in the market for a new set of wheels though, probably after christmas now!! Hoping its not the grabbers doing it, as i really like the tyre. Good for pretty much everything i need

There is hardly any bead seat left, I wouldn't use those for a moment longer tbh.

I would not trust them either as they may become unseated with no warning.

If its the tyres fault how can JLR help/act? or is it a recommended tyre?

It is not the tyres that are at fault, it is alloy that is wearing.

I've only heard of this happening with one tyre type, ATs. Not the tyres LR fit or other all terrain types like ATR or LTZ. How is that LR's fault?

I'm now on my 3rd set of GG AT's and my car is used a lot off-road and there are no signs of wear on any of the wheels. I have been aware of some people having this problem so have always kept a close watch on the wheels.Cheers Ian

Hi ive got 4x old D3 HSE wheels exactly the same as that one pictured that had i few sets of GG ATs fitted so i mentioned it to a friend who works on LR's at an independent LR specialist up in derbyshire & he said he has seen loads of rims like mine that had also had GG fitted & that's what had worn my inner rim away
He advised me not to bother fitting GG's as they eat away the rims
So i bought a mint replacement set of 4 with original pirelli scorpions fitted from factory but down to wear limit & bought 4x new pirelli scorpions, when i took the original tyres off the inner rim was like brand new :thumbsup:
