Coolant pipe disconnected itself - help pls

Having accelerated onto motorway this morning, I suddenly lost all coolant. It was this pipe that disconnected itself.

The metal clip was still in position but the pipe was disconnected. To best of my knowledge that pipe has never been removed since car was new.

Should I replace with new and what might have caused it to come off - wondering if excess pressure formed.

It could have been working loose for years. Refit, refill, bleed and then monitor. Excess pressure in the system should be released by the vent cap, not by blowing a joint.

Good luck.

Oh yes it will have been removed when the cambelts have been done, it just pushes on and clips in, it sounds like they have not pushed it fully home. I always put a smear of grease on the O'ring inside so it slide's up fully.

Thanks chaps. Yes, it looks to me like it was not on properly. I stopped quickly so hope no damage. I only changed the antifreeze in the summer Big Cry

Need to remind myself how much antifreeze - unless someone beats me to it.

Remember not to melt your radiator.

You will need just over 10 litres (if using pre-mix), presuming you do not have rear aircon.

I only managed to get about 5 litres in, presumably there is still water below the water pump.

HOWEVER, it sounds like the water pump is knackered. Rattling from around the fan area which reduces to almost nothing when the engine is revved. I will have to do some research on here and see how big a job that is. [Geoff is coming to replace wishbones etc this weekend Whistle ]

Keep bleeding the system properly before you condemn anything.

Robbie, you are a star! Bow down Bow down Bow down I left it running and bled it for a little longer and it is now running just as sweet as it was before! You saved the day when "we" diagnosed the missing fuse and you have just saved me more heartache. At least this time it was not the whole of your Sunday, stuck on a thread with me Sad

Geoff, you would have had a good laugh if you had turned up and said - "so how long did you bleed it". Answer is clearly - "Not Censored long enough"

Thanks again chaps. Robbie, I think it is a box of beers now Very Happy

My pleasure. If you haven't already remember to hold the engine speed at 3,000 RPM for 1 minute, idle for 5 mins, hold at 3,000 RPM for a further minute and keep the engine running at idle until it is up to temp and the thermostat opens then bleed again. Use both bleeds screws but the top one is best and give the top hoses a bit of a squeeze to burp them. Jacking up the front on MY07+ cars helps too but yours will be fine on the level.

I have been undoing the black plastic bleed screw on the expansion bottle, where is the second one?

Under the engine cover on a pipe from the cylinder head. It has a similar sort of bleed screw so you cannot mistake it for anything else.

Thanks Robbie. Yes, I did intuitively rev the engine to pull the coolant through, but have again done it and opened the other bleed screw. Very little air came out. Overall I have replaced about 7litres of water and coolant, which seems about right.

I have to say the Westbourne Motors recovery chap was first rate. The first thing he looked for was a disconnected pipe. Almost as if he had seen it before (which he hadn't).

I will take some water with me on my next long drive on Thursday at 5:30am. Hope I don't see the Westbourne motors man again.
