Lost all initial power!

Most of you know of my glow plug issue. Thank you for all the advice but for now I want to steer the conversation towards a new issue since picking up the car.

Got the car back today. The mechanic said that he ran diagnostics on the car and it came back with a turbo issue. Since running diagnostics, on start-up the info screen says 'Engine System Fault'. It's never said this before.

Now, while driving home, when I put my foot down at 30mph I normally get the power kicking in after a second. Currently it's taking 6/7 seconds for any acceleration and going up bank with my foot down is at a snail's pace.

What's happened?

Could be EGR valves gone - if it does eventually pull - or it could be turbo actuator.

Need the codes read though, otherwise its a bit of a guess!

Just spoke to the mechanic who says that as there was a turbo fault code, he thinks the car has gone into a 'safe mode' until the code can be reset.

Does that sound right?

Done a quick search on this issue and found this on disco3club

If you "lost contact" with one of the engine management ecus then your engine has fallen back into safe mode. It's no longer measuring the amount of air that is being sucked in, and it's no longer using just the right mount of fuel for the current airflow, temperature and other conditions. It's just throwing enough diesel in to respond to the accelerator peddle position. Smoke is a natural occurrence under these conditions

I would hazard a guess that something has interfered with the validity of the data on the high speed can bus, could be a dodgy connector, broken/melty wire, or perhaps even this new gizmo you've got connected that's currently monitoring the can?

If it makes any difference, all the mirrors, radio, clock etc was reset to factory settings too.

If ESF was displayed, it cuts most boost pressure, to protect itself

If there us that much lag and a turbo code stored, I would be looking at the intercooler pipework, and cooler itself along with the air flow meter readings (depending on which codes were stored)

Bear in mind, It may be an actual turbo issue

Mikey, thanks for getting involved. I know you're massively experienced.

Is it pure coincidence that I take the car in for glow plugs and come out with a ESF and loss of power issue, or has the mechanic messed up somewhere?

There are parts of the air intake that need to be disconnected to access the glow plugs. Would be a huge coincidence if it was not related to.the work carried out.

It may be as simple as a split/loose turbo hose, or forgetting to.plug in the AFM, or even the plastic housing on the front of the throttle body not being remitted properly.

These things do happen, so well worth checking Thumbs Up

Thanks Mike.

The guy did mention that after he'd finished the plugs and ran diagnostics there was loads of white and blue smoke that took a good 5 mins to clear.

Is that inter cooler hose related?
