Steering knock still after new rack

Dealer fitted new steering rack as it knocked when going over uneven ground, mostly off road but sometimes on road on bumps. They said it was a faulty steering rack,[ TSB on this].
Now it is no better, if eneything it is getting worse. It will go back to the dealer.
Has eneyone else had this problem ? Mayby yhey replaced it with a same faulty one.
It would be good to have some ideas before tackleing them.

Australia

Rob, I've had a bit of a problem with dealers on part replacement for various items.

Land Rover Australia has a policy of using all existing stock (First In First Out) before goig to new stuff.

In my experience, some of the dealers fail to read the TSB correctly (in one case the dealer I went to couldn't even read the diagnosis procedure properly!) and install the same part number because it's in stock, rather than the new part number than fixes the problem.

I don't know if this is the case for you, but it might be worth checking out.
 Have a nice day!

Thanks Jamo, That was my first thought, When I got it back I checked just to see if it had been in fact replaced, it was all new looking . Well that will be some ammo aimed at them.

Mine goes in tomorrow (Mon 13) for rack, all ball joints (some again), and new columns (again) in an effort to get rid of this problem. Should know by Wednesday.

Interestingly I have a torn lower boot on the left rear suspension also being replaced. While we were looking at that we saw a 'leak' from the leaft rear outboard CV joint. LR were not able to get the specific parts so are replacing the entire shaft with both CV joints (ie diff to wheel).....

What are the symptoms for this? When I'm on a rough road the steering does knock a bit as it hits the bumps. I'd assumed this was normal.

How do I tell when it isn't?

Cheers, Steve

Yep, sounds just like mine. I'd assumed it was normal. Apart from visiting the dealer, how do I know if it is knocking more than it should? Is any knock at all bad?

There should be no knocking at all when everything's ok.

I agree there should be no knocking/clicking when all is well.

In my case you can also feel it in the steering, and it doesn't have to be rough ground. I get it on any lock when the steering is loaded (ie reversing up an incline while steering)

Might not be the same, but I had a knock at the front. It was felt through the steering and also the pedals.

The one thing I could show the dealer was that it gave a very distinct clunk when the brakes were applied sharply. This led them to change both the lower wishbones. No more knock now.

To be absolutely honest, mine does have a slightly loose feel on rough surfaces, but nothing more than I would expect of a heavy car thats done 82000 miles. The heavy knock that it had for a long time has definitly gone.
