Discovery 3 Turbo to Manifold - Exhaust paste or dry?

Hi, doing a fair bit of work to my 54 plate TDV6. Just wondering if the turbo to exhaust manifold joint should be assembled dry or with some paste? I see it has no gasket when removing the old one or listed on the diagram.

Thanks,
Rory

Morning Pete,

Thanks for such a swift reply. Good to know, its just it felt wrong bolting to flanges together with no form of seal. At least I know now.

Hoping to have her back together soon... did a number of other jobs at the same time including glow plugs (3 came out with the 20nm vibrate tool, then the next snapped after an hour of vibrating and a days soaking in Kroil...), so just finished putting the head back on having removed it to get the remnants out.

Second and third thoughts have been had on starting the work on and old girl like this!

Thanks again

There should be a seal? You should have a new crushable metal gasket between the flanges

Thanks for the input there.

All the rest apart from this came with the new genuine Borg Warner turbo. Nothing is shown on the parts diagrams for the turbo or exhaust manifolds from Land Rover paperwork?

Do you have a part number I could look up? I think Pete was saying for this particular joint its just flange to flange, no gasket or compound

I asked when I did mine.

Disco Mikey said no gasket.

i fitted this one on mine... a D3 that is, when i transpalnted it with a JAG engine

it is a dry fitted gasket, seals by crushing as aja4x4 suggested

since cast iron to cast iron, can be a 100% sealed fit, due to the material.... the surface needs to be in 100% perfect condition, but there is no spigot........ i suppose if you can lap the manifold side (turbo is new i read?) so ot is dead square.....

but seal is more sure, and far more easy Wink
 Best regards
Harold

Thanks for all the responses on this. Quick post update - Got her running again on Tuesday and its super silent, no leaks with a dry connection there, no gasket, no compound as per the early recommendations.

Quite a rarity for it not to be farting from some exhaust related joint with the new crossover pipe and manifold gaskets in there too!
