Considering how much the price increased when the FL2 became the DS, I'm far from convinced that we're not in for a stiff price increase.

Stunning is very subjective, if it looks anything like the Disco Sport then it will be far from stunning and just another eurobox

To be fair though, Ken, when you take a look at the current LR range, I think it does add reason to our worries. Before the D3, we only really had the L322 to look back at. This time, we have the Epoke, L405, RRS2 and DS, plus the changes that bring us to the current D4. Then there's fuel economy and emissions pressure. None of those fill me with confidence that the D5 will be what many of us are after, though good cars they may be.

Realistically, we're all just waiting to see what LR produce. Neutral

The D3 was far more revolutionary, doors that had no creases, electronic driving modes, air suspension like the P38, a split tailgate that wasn't symmetrical, an air intake only on one side and no spare wheel on the back. The LRO forums were just like this, the world was going to end, LR had lost the plot etc. Most would never have been able to buy a new one anyway and by the time they were cheap enough they were so popular they had forgotten the furore.

That's an interesting thought really, because I think revolutionary is exactly want I want the D5 to be. If it follows current conventions, it wouldn't be for me, but genuinely revolutional, and I'm likely to be very happy - not that I'd be buying one for a long time anyway.

Not as revolutionary in style as all that, the D4 looks very like the distant offspring of the Defender, none of the current range do.

I used to be heavily into BMW MINI's and owned two of the first generation cars (a R50 Cooper and a R53 Cooper S) and the same things were said when the much uglier 2nd generation was launched. "All you people who complain about Mark 2 BMW MINI are just like what's gone before and you'll accept it in time", except I didn't and I moved on.

Look back on the BMW MINI Forums and all of those people are talking to each other to say that's exactly what happened. However, it ignores all of those people that left and the fact that the MINI hasn't grown it's market share significantly in years and is now throughly outsold on its home turf by the Fiat 500.

Besides the D2 is still a nice design and a good looking car!

My take on the design/development of D3 is that they took the best aspects of L322 and D2 and applied modern technology.

If they take a similar approach and come up with a chimera of D4 and L405 the suspicion is that current market trends will lean towards luxury vs utility and consequently a higher price.

As noted above, there is clear defender dna in the D3, something I doubt we will see in D5. For those looking for capable family transport with luxury, D5 will be a winner. Those looking for a dog wagon and tow vehicle will be better served by the 2017/2018 defender.
I know it's not considered "kind" to say no these days, but no. Just no, ok? And if it's not ok, still no.

You would have to be out of your mind to buy a new model LR at launch. Laughing

You'll only be paying to do the testing that they never bothered to do. Laughing

But why??

Isn't that what a disco does now? Preformes off road and does the horrible jobs a defender does but does it all in warmth, dry and comfort, where a defender does it in discomfort, damp and cold Whistle Laughing

First off - these posts are hilarious

Second it will retain the utility and capability of JLR - its a core principle and most loved

All that said, never expect it to be cheap - JLR do not want to make affordable (read cheap) cars and that isnt where the money is.

I do agree with the above - i said it earlier - the biggest issue is/are emissions, crash and pedestrian safety and fuel economy - these influence the design so much.

I have heard some scary things about what's coming next in tax and emissions and that will make the D5 design not a worry on the utility front.

That said i liked the dc100 so what do i know
