United Kingdom 2005 Discovery 3 TDV6 S Manual Zambezi SilverDiscovery 3
clutch replacement at 33k miles

Hi! I am reeling a bit having just been charged £1400 for a new clutch for my 2 year-old D3 TDV6S. The mechanic actually sat down when he saw the bill he was about to give me: I was left standing in a state of shock. Well to be fair I had been warned but I was hoping they might not have to replace the flywheel. Is this the going rate? I was told it was only the second D3 clutch they have had to replace at this dealership and they had tried to persuade Land Rover to contribute as a goodwill gesture but they wouldn't play along. Anyone else out there had to replace the clutch?

There are quite a few, and to my knowledge, a far few were covered by warranty. There is a Tech Service Bulletin regarding incorrect clutch components fitted to a range of vehicles. If yours in in this range, and you have not been doing anything silly with the car, you should be able to fight this one.

If your profile is right, and you've got a 2005 D3, then it'll be within the VIN range that this TSB covers (pm me if you want the full contents)

Quote:

TSB 308-001

A customer may report a concern of one or more of the following symptoms:

This bulletin has been re-issued to include a closing VIN.

Strong odors from under vehicle when, or after, a slow speed maneuver (e.g. difficult parking maneuver), especially when on gradients.
Clutch slip.
The clutch pedal has stuck in the downward position or not releasing fully.
Difficulty in engaging gears.

Cause: The clutch drive plate lining material is not tolerant to high heat inputs caused by slipping, becomes soft and is then damaged beyond recovery even when it has cooled.
Action: Should a customer express concern regarding the above, refer to the Service Procedure detailed in this bulletin to renew the clutch assembly.

Ask your dealer why Service bulletin LTB00018 issued 27 November 2006 does not apply to your car.

It covers Manual transmission vehicles only VIN-range: 5A300394-7A422271.

I am not a lawyer but this may also be covered by the Sale of Goods and services which not only gives you up to 6 years to get a fault fixed present at the time of manufacture but also that the goods should be fit for purpose and work over a reasonable time - Expecting the clutch to last for at least 60000 mile in normal use in not unreasonable.

Hey ho -it's me again. Can now update on my 'smelly clutch' saga.

First clutch replaced at 33K & uprated one fitted. It lasted 3K & started to honk again. Now replaced under warranty again, together with flywheel. Let's hope it's going to be OK this time

BTW the vehicle is a Dec 54 plate

Timms,
Had my clutch and clutch master cylinder replaced under warranty at about 45,000 miles by my local dealer - no arguments at all from Land Rover.
Have a go at them if i was you and ring Land Rover customer services. As others have stated many of us have new clutches under warranty. PM me if you need any info.

Thanks! I went back to the dealer armed with all this and they are having a rethink & getting onto Landrover. I will post again if I get a result. Quite apart from the issue of the warranty....is £1400 the going rate for this job?

clutch

Have i got the dreaded clutch problem. It started to judder on pulling away a few weeks ago but getting very slowly worse.
Its only done 45k with full landrover history upto 32 k then indie.
i have warrenty direct cover with the betterment included.
What would the warrenty cover do you think, would landrover cover the faulty flywheel ?

Thanks chaps merry Chrismas
