Torque converter.

55 plate D3 HSE Auto with 173K miles that’s done some heavy towing.

Back in Aug 2013 with 136K miles on it my D3 had the usual Judder associated with worn Torque Converter issues.
As a Medium term solution I went with a Megaflush plus Doctor Tranny additive by Geoff, which sorted the problem completely until a couple of weeks ago.

I want to point out that I am completely satisfied with the service Geoff provided, and that I chose to extend the life of the Torque Converter rather than replace at that stage.
It’s given another 37K miles @28months for me, including some heavy towing, so I’m more than happy.

The Judders have however now come back, and are getting worse far more quickly than they appeared the first time, so it’s now time to change the Torque converter before it does any (More) damage to the gearbox itself.

I normally do everything to my D3 myself, and have changed Torque Converters before in a couple of different saloon cars, but would struggle to get the D3 up high enough in my garage to do this job comfortably.
A local Auto transmission specialist has quoted me £1100 plus VAT(£1320) to supply and fit an ‘exchange’ Torque converter, including replacing the gearbox oil pan and filter. Plus of course new fluid.
The price looks OK to me, the specialist has a good reputation locally and rebuilds the Torque converters themselves as that’s their main business, along with rebuilding auto boxes themselves.
I will publish the name when I have the car back and can comment from first-hand experience on their service.
It’s booked in for tomorrow and should take 1.5 days.

It’s a little badly timed, as I was planning on swapping the D3 for a 2010/11/12 D4(Or Possibly FFRR TDV8) early this year, which considering this £1300 will probably have to go back a couple of months now.
I am however thinking that when I come to advertise the D3, anyone who’s done any research or knows what they are talking about will see the work as a real bonus on a high mileage car, and I might even recover @1/2 the £1300 in a higher sales value.

Watch this space for an update.

What a difference this has made.

It was obviously a lot worse than I thought, and being gradual I’d obviously been compensating without realising it.
There are no more 'judders', and the revcounter needle no longer waves at me manically.

The biggest surprise I’ve had is how much quieter it is.
There is less mechanical noise, and I’m doing less revs to achieve the same road speed.

Having received a first class service I’m now more than happy to recommend Express Gearbox in Portsmouth.

They had the car two days, supplied and fitted a refurbished Torque Converter, changed the pan/filter etc for a very reasonable price.
They do so many D3s that they also had in stock several additional small parts like bolts, filler plug, and the wiring sleeve that needed to be replaced.

I'm hoping for a similar result as I have mine booked in with Bristol Transmissions for week after next. The price is slightly cheaper at £975+VAT (£1170 - why is everything car-related quoted as plus VAT?) but I'll probably add another £100 to that with hotel and food costs Rolling Eyes

Also planning to have the rear prop replaced and waiting to hear if Advanced Factors can get one...

Edit: Turns out they can't, so I've just bought an OEM one from Rimmer Bros, who have a 15% discount deal on at the moment Smile

I had my torque convertor done at Bristol Transmissions, they also identified that the propshaft needed replacing, they had them in stock and as it was already off did'nt charge for additional labour. Cannot recommend them highly enough.

Yeah, they're not going to charge me for fitting even though I'm supplying my own. They have to take it off anyway so it's only reasonable. For them to supply one was more expensive though.

I did actually consider driving down to Bristol before finding Express in Portsmouth.

But of course, like LandRoverAnorak, with the extra cost of fuel, a hotel room and two days off work it made sense for me to go local.

I'm lucky to have Steve Norman not far away who, of course, did a top job also. Thumbs Up

Wasn't long ago I got my prop from AF. Supply issues presumably?

Yeah, they can't get stock until mid-Feb unfortunately.

^^^^ I'm curious to know this also! ^^^^

I rang for a price on getting my TC changed somewhere more local to me but the bloke I spoke to said at the mileage (192k) I should really be thinking about a gearbox recon.

I had similar 2 yrs ago, Geoff did my flush and I got another 20K out of the car before I went for a TC Bow down

Rather than go again as I knew id be keeping it a while I went for a TC with Neil Smith Transmissions in Cannock Thumbs Up

New TC, metal pan, oil and filter, Megatronic sleeve as referred to earlier etc.

Its certainly worth doing right.

As for rebuilds Question
I've heard of a few being recommended and do wonder on the need (feels a little Kwik fit fitter) as another local specialist advised I would benefit from stripping the box as well as the TC change. In my opinion its unlikely to add a huge benefit if all you have is the TC vibration and the oil is in good condition, i.e. not burnt and has been looked after / monitored or replace previously, now happily on 145K

I dont want to put a dampener on it fella but I had the TC done in August and had to have a new gear box in November ! They also replaced the TC again because they said it could have been contaminated by the oil and would not g/tee it unless they did it all. The cost was £2040 inc vat. It is great now. I hope yours does not go the same way Thumbs Up Mine may have been a one off Big Cry
