My D3 got its engine replaced under warranty in 2008 no questions asked. The car just rattled to a halt and out came the yellow taxi. Never got a full explanation as to what caused it, but I assume it was this. 23.5MY Defender 90 X-Dynamic SE D250 MHEV Pangea Green

My engine failed, but nothing to do with crank - mine went due to thrust bearing apparently. Odd for an auto. Mark.

Thanks J77 & angelfire,
Can you please add your failures to the poll... as generic as it was not isolated to the crank.. Owning a Discovery 3 is like dating a model.. a firm body and shape, wow.. the ride is fantastic > for this your wallet can take a pounding and you worry about being deflated at any time...

Just to keep the post active here is a link to the SA 4x4 forum where another engine failure after a recon with tabbed bearings as the "ultimate fix" - crankshaft snapped journal N0.2.

How many of these failed engines have, or have not had a replacement oil pump?
The new pump gives pressure much, much quicker than an old worn pump.
Of course, this theory is if the rebuilt engine in question had a new pump fitted... My D3 Build Thread

I can imagine private owners becoming dissolutioned with the marque, selling the "broken" vehicle on, and leaving the forum, therefore no replies to your poll. However, I would have thought that those in the trade would have had many a tale to tell.
Andi.
I sold mine following a crankshaft failure, landrover customer service were a nightmare and did their level best to sit on their hands, it completely put me off owning one again. A year later they did repair it but did not want to disclose details. Various series vehicles (sold)

Sorry about not helping your survey response numbers as I'm just having a nosey.
I did however have Landrover pay 80% towards the cost of replacing my engine after I suffered the Oil Pump Casing Failure last August on my 08MY TDV6 (114K miles). Discovery 3 TDV6 HSE

I think for this survey to have any sort of weight we also need to have options for:
- my TDV6 engine is still running fine
- my TDV6 engine failed for reasons not mentioned above.
Then, most people who view this thread will be able to answer one of the questions, and you might start to get a clearer idea of the % of failures.
Otherwise you're just playing darts in the dark... 2008 RRS TDV6 - Chawton White/Black/Lined Oak - 20's, h/k, sunroof - 350K KM.

My crankshaft has split in two. It did the rattle of death and then the old girl just locked up. So that's it! Economically beyond repair.

D3 crankshaft bearing failure |
|
I have just experienced my second engine failure on my D3 58 plate.
The first failure was apparently water in the engine causing a hydraulic lock, apparently the air box drain hole was blocked so the air box filled with water overtime and eventually sucked water into the top of the engine. I find this hard to believe because I had just done 160 miles on a hot sunny day.
LR gave the usual run around of taking to a LR dealer for inspection and diagnosis costing £1,500 with no offer of support so I had the engine replaced by my indie.
I have now done 20k miles on the replaced engine and it has failed again. My indie says he found high resistance on cylinders 2 and 4, and I noticed smoke coming out of the dipstick holder when the engine failed indicating something was getting hot, although nothing on the temp gauge. He suspects bearing failure. I contacted LR and their technician seemed to think the diagnosis was correct but would need to remove the sump and look at the crankshaft at a cost of £500.
I have contacted LR explaining the problem and they loosely indicated that if it's a manufacturing fault they may offer some financial assistance to replace the engine, which my local dealer has quoted me £8,500 to do.
I want to fight this because I can't afford to replace the engine again and I'm looking to be £18,000 out of pocket since buying the car.
Any comments or thoughts how to deal with LR.

Following my last post, Land Rover have undertaken two hours diagnostics and determined my engine has a big end fault but can't say exactly what the fault is without stripping the engine. I suspect a manufacturing fault and I think their technical department also suspect this but are refusing to say and are making any excuse to not provide a replacement engine.
I have been in regular contact with Land Rover direct who are now saying they can't help because:-
1. The engine is out of spec - I assume they are referring to the fact the egr valves have been blanked off
2. The vehicle is out of warranty
3. The vehicle is 6 years old
I thought that a manufacturing fault falls outside of warranty and age of vehicle when it comes to rectifying the fault.
Can anyone give me advise on the above, and has anyone been in a similar situation with Land Rover and how did you resolve it.
