Talk some sense into me
Ok, close to 7 year maintenance (Feb 4) + Dutch equivalent of MOT, Dan's FBH acquired last year playing up once in a while, right rear passenger doorlock most likely to be replaced (lacking time myself) most likely ARB bushes shot, brakes up for renewal, just changed battery and suspect glowplugs. Been offered an XC90 (shoot me, right now....) and seriously doubting. Car primarily for holidays, took it to the Pyrenees (fantastic) and other places. Love the car. Willing to invest in preventive maintenance but hate to get stuck while taking the family abroad. 2009 TDV6, 135k kilometres, EGR replaced @70k, BAS remap. What do you guys think?RLD Sump Guard

Ignore the glow plugs and get a FBH remote to pre heat the engine. Much cheaper than glow plugs failed replacement.Bodsys Brake Bible

If I ever again chance to a new car, Volvo will be my choice. Either XC90 or S90. But that's very unlikely to happen Happy with my Green Oval and it's got some character compared to all look-a-like modern cars

ARB bushes are very cheap and straightforward to replace, brakes are not that expensive, if you can do belts yourself then great otherwise not that dear either. I think you are on the right track with your maintenance option but it's what you feel at the end of the day. XC90 is no match in so many ways......

Go to bed things will be fine in the morning when you realise you will miss your LR, and the thought of driving the soulless Volvo will have given you nightmares.

Well, nobody talked sense into me so decided to take the plunge for a fully loaded XC90. I'm sure the kids will grumble when they sit in it, but that's just during holidays. I'm sure I'll be back in a 2-3 years, but than a D4. For now they are simply too expensive here.

Red Merle: I know exactly what you mean. For now it's economics over emotion. Would you believe that a relatively low mileage 2012 D4 HSE would still cost around £45-50000! Given the expected depreciation of the D3 once the D5 comes into play, the 7yr service coming up, suspect egr's and compressor, some suspension bangs and bongs so potentially seriously higher running costs this year, I'm calling it a day for the time being. Got a good deal. Have briefly looked at a FL but not really my cup of tea. Don't worry, I will be back.RLD Sump Guard

£45-50,000. Ouch!
From my experience of what happened to FL2 prices when the Disco Sport came out, I wouldn't be surprised if the values of the outgoing D4 firmed up for a while, just like the FL2 did, but I can appreciate the spectre of huge incoming maintenance costs might be a big incentive!
Good luck and hope that you can come back soon.2011 - 2015: 3 x FL2

I fully understand and agree with your decision jobster - we would have gone there ourselves if it weren't for the fact that I really do need the offroad capability of the Discovery (in whatever form).
Approx 20 years ago my first wife and our then 2 year old daughter were hit from the rear by a 7 tonner whilst they were stationary (he was apparently checking his radio channel ). Thankfully they were in a Volvo 740 as it fully protected them both (although it did break into two parts ). Since then I have, with one exception, always had a Volvo for SWMBO and the kids. It is reassuring to see that the new XC90 has just been voted the safest production car on the road We are currently considering an XC60/70 for SWMBO's next car - particularly attractive is the 5-year service package at £500Currently 2009 Disco 3 SE, 2013 MY D4 HSE and 2016 D4 SE

I will still follow what goes on here, friendly banter and that. When the time comes, the missus will have the XC90 and I will move on to a D4.RLD Sump Guard

Ok, swapped D3 for XC90 this Tuesday. Economics over emotion. What can I say, can't find anything wrong. Except now I'm driving a car not a D3. I'll be back.RLD Sump Guard

Same challenges for me but......I've decided to invest in some preventative maintenance and keep the ol' girl for a few more years yet

I bought a new XC90 in 2004, after owning 3 Disco's in a row (200Tdi, 300Tdi & TD5) and enjoyed 8 years of effortless and trouble free motoring.
I returned to LR in 2012 and sold my XC90 to my father in law.
He had it serviced yesterday at 98,000 and it also sailed through its MOT. Apart from having the timing belt replaced all it has ever needed throughout its life is new tyres and 1 new battery.
A wise choice

The D5 powered XC90 was a great car, based on the excellent S60/V70/S80 platform; the last cars to be designed fully by Volvo before Ford, then the Chinese, took control. It should keep going for as long as the electricals hold out 2011 - 2015: 3 x FL2
