Upper Tailgate Gas Strut Problem |
|
Help!
Upper Tailgate Gas Strut Fixing.
Gas strut attaches to ball ended bolt....which then bolts into the bodywork.
Mine has come out and enlarged the threaded hole so does not grip at all.
Simple solution is to put a nyloc nut on from inside bodywork and bolt it back together.
How on earth do I get access to the back of it?
I've tried partially dropping headliner, pulling off trim at the corner but still having trouble!
Any help greatly appreciated!

Remove the rear light cluster (off side at a guess ) look up and there is a hole, I attached a long piece of welding wire to a suitable nut (8mm IIRC) tacked to a repair washer and after enlarging the hole slightly, (to allow the nut and large washer - slotted hole) threaded it up the inside of the rear pillar, its surprisingly easy to locate it and using thread lock on the bolt (and another repair washer on the outside)tighten it up, I just left the wire inside. Apart from the initial preparation actually fitting the new nut took 20mins and I'd been putting it off for ages - until it snapped!

What a ballache!
No hole behind light cluster, well possibly one that had been seam sealed.., but small.
So drilled and enlarged it, welded a new nut onto a washer and then one wee tack to a length of steel rod.
Got the ball bolt loctited and got it fitted holding rod....
All tight, sorted, just to get that rod out...the small tack was stronger than I thought, so hammered it until it broke off!
No time to address hole as my good wife needs it this weekend!
Thanks again!
