Early 2005 D3, opinions please
Hi,
I've just started to look for a D3, having had a D1 300tdi and a D2 TD5.
Have spotted an early 2005 HSE with 51k on the clock- What i'd like to know is are the earlier models more problem prone? What should i be looking for? I can't seem to find a definitive answer. Does £10k sound reasonable for such an early Discovery with this mileage?
Appreciate any help that comes my way.
Cheers,
James

Not necessarily ...better though to start with the rationale that its an 11 year old motor 21 year LR veteran > D2 GS 2003 > D3 S 2006 > D3 HSE 2009 > D4 HSE 2013 > D4 HSE 2015 > D5 HSE 2018 > DS HSE R-Dynamic P300e 2021
Early models like my 05 had mild steel brake pipes fitted So check to see if they have been replaced, can be a ball ache normally body off as they obviously run front to back.
Check the timing belt has been done 105k miles or 7 years.
Check soon roof for leaks and all electric seats work.
Tyres new set around £5-600
Heated front and rear screens.
Has it had the tow bar and brake servo recall.
That's enough to be going on with also might be a tad high price wise as DG said have a look at prices on here Goodyear Duratracs
Pirelli ATR gone
GG AT Gone
RLD Spare wheel protector

I would say for £10k its a bit expensive even with low miles assuming miles are genuine.
Servicing and premptive maintenance on an 11yr old car is everything as already said. I would personally go for a car thats had all the usual gremlins dealt with and meticulously maintained by an enthusiast than a box standard once a year garage fluid change visit....................................................................................................

Can only give my insight from my experience with my own 54 plate TDV6 S. I bought it with a few minor problems nearly three years ago, 78K miles on the clock for £10k. Having done all my own mods and servicing on it (minus some wishbones done by an indie), I can honestly say I've never had any major problems with it other than those caused by my own stupidity (messing around with the suspension and an IID tool, and not checking my wheel nuts after a brake change, causing my wheel to fly off at 20mph).
I'm now close to 130k miles and it's been more reliable than both my previous cars put together... though one of those was a Mazda so lets forget about that one what is this life, if full of care?

I have an early 54 plate HSE, when they were specced to the hilt, it's on 150k now.
Bar the parking sensors being a bit huffy, everything electrical works perfectly.
Belts should have been done years ago.
It should have the recalls as spoken about by another poster.
I would like to see a new battery and alternator on it, they go with age and the lower mileage could be lots of short journeys.
If an auto, get the box flushed and a new filter in it for peace of mind.
My cars had its share of wear and tear items changed but that's to be expected with the high mileage.
It's only truly failed me twice, once with a starter motor that died and the 2nd due to a garage not doing work properly and the cv boot coming loose, leaving the cv exposed and it failed.
This car is the oldest and highest mileage car I've owned, I've owned it the longest of any car I've had and I'm still happy with it so it will continue to get used, modified and maintained.
