Noisy TDV6 engine `chatter`.

I have just had the engine and turbo replaced by Land Rover on my Disco 3 that has covered 100k miles and has a flrsh. It would appear I have an odd noise which I am yet to get advice on and wonder if the forum has any ideas? I`ve done a search and there does seem some unresolved history of something similar with other members.

The new engine has covered less than 500 miles and I`m half way through a fresh tank of fuel with a good dose of Millers injector cleaner ........... no difference yet!

I immediately noticed on collection a `rapid pinking` / `chattering sewing machine` / `under water` type noise with acceleration in approximately the 1500 revs up to 2500 range coming from the engine. I would have said timing chain rattle if I knew what I was talking about, but I don't!

Nothing on start up and only comes on after a few minutes of driving then stays. The van drives perfectly well and is otherwise quiet but I hear the chatter and cant stop listening which saddens me in something that I had hoped would be 100%.

I`d love to be armed with some ideas as to what the noise might be if anyone can hazard a guess or better still from experience know what`s going on.

Many thanks, Robin.

If it's a deep growl under load in that 1500-2500 rev range, it seems to be a normal thing for this drivetrain. It could be coming from the torque converter but noone seems to have a definitive answer on that one. Because the TC doesn't lock up for the first few minutes while the trans warms up, that could be why you don't start hearing it immediately.

If you can hear a clattery type noise under load, that's normal too - it's a diesel after all and there's no mistaking it for anything but a diesel, although it is much more refined than the Asian diesels.

Have you spoken to the workshop that carried out the job?

I had a a tinny rattle at about 1500 to 2000 rpm, it was most noticeable if the driver's window was open and on a very light throttle. I spent a lot of time looking for loose heat shields etc because that was the sort of thing it sounded like. I recently fitted a reconditioned torque converter to cure the well known juddering under acceleration and an interesting side effect is that the rattle has been substantially reduced, so I would tend to support the theory that it is coming from the torque converter.

Thanks for the suggestions. I hadn't thought of the torque converter and the noise is a light chattering rather than any growling. I am yet to experience any significant juddering on acceleration, something to look forward to.
The injector noise shields are in place but when looking I did notice some `soot` around the top central clamps of the mesh covered silver pipes, EGR valves? on engine top. Could it be a `blowing` of some sort. I`ll keep my ears on it and get ready to communicate with LR over the next few weeks if it worsens.

Mines been like it for 14 months now, it has the tinny rattle on light throttle at low speed and has now recently started to growl every now and then, I wonder if its hungry for money Mr. Green

`Tinny rattles` seem commonplace amongst the Disco 3 community. I expect with time the collective intellect of the group will have that `light bulb` moment. Let it be soon, before I get the `growl` set in.

I work at a main dealer and it is injector noise that most can hear under light throttle more so in the eu4 engine due to emissions regs

That's really helpful, thank you. It confirms what my local main JLR dealer has just told me after a drive and listen. Diagnosed as a `known characteristic` of the piezo fuel injectors on these engines and not an issue. Fingers crossed this is it.
