David Milliband is 9/1 with the bookies to replace JC. Personally, I believe he was a little lack lustre but think he was the most honest of all the main party leaders.
The thing is David Cameron is eurosceptic but just lied 100% whereas JC is eurosceptic and couldn't bring himself to ever fully endorse it, so I actually believe he is in touch with the voting membership more than his PLP but just wasn't willing to sell out completely by gushing about the EU.

Sobering to consider where we might have been now but for his untimely death. Very probably still a Labour win in 1997 with Smith as PM rather than Blair and all that led to, Iraq etc.
Might, we'll never know, have been a very different world.Arthur.

Well with any luck we will find out at least a little bit of truth regarding Blair's interaction with Bush in a couple of months time. It's funny how the death of one good man at the wrong time can change a nations history.

Corbyn is popular with party membership ...he is principled albeit it often controversial and although there is a lot to be said for being principled in this day and age, all of that matters not ..he does not carry any weight with the wider electorate ... he will therefore never get into power. Forget him.
Smith died ...and we can all wonder for sure but I don't think he could have surpassed Blairs success (Blair is Mr. UberUnpopular because of Iraq..but irrespective of that he won 3 elections)
David Miliband was imo the best option for the leadership. If you ever listened to him, he had a depth and statesmanlike quality which could have even overshadowed Blair.
Some other notables could have been players but crapped out when it mattered.
Here's hoping for someone robust & effective not least because we need that as an opposition now more than ever 21 year LR veteran > D2 GS 2003 > D3 S 2006 > D3 HSE 2009 > D4 HSE 2013 > D4 HSE 2015 > D5 HSE 2018 > DS HSE R-Dynamic P300e 2021

Hilary Benn? I have a great deal of respect for him (which I know you'll find somewhat counter to my usual stand on things)

If he took the remain position because it as better for the country even though he preferred out, then he did a good thing. It's a statesmanly thing to do.

No fan of Cameron but I think he actually has tried to do the right thing for the good of the country all through this. Shame he's let himself be dragged in to the slanging match stuff e.g. World War 3 etc.Visiting from rrsport.co.uk

Benn yes possibly ...dare I even say it Stephen Kinnock ....both have fathers who have been notable but have now laid their own paths. Both are popular but I'm not sure on depth.21 year LR veteran > D2 GS 2003 > D3 S 2006 > D3 HSE 2009 > D4 HSE 2013 > D4 HSE 2015 > D5 HSE 2018 > DS HSE R-Dynamic P300e 2021

I know he is not an option but Allan Johnson is very credible and seems to speak slot if sense in a calm sensible way.
I thought if I were a Tory grandee I'd hate to see him run.
Also spot in DG about david milliband, so glad the unions fecked him over.

Alan is a very charismatic and articulate man Dave ...he's been to the gaff many times, but he doesn't have the required personal drive to be leader.21 year LR veteran > D2 GS 2003 > D3 S 2006 > D3 HSE 2009 > D4 HSE 2013 > D4 HSE 2015 > D5 HSE 2018 > DS HSE R-Dynamic P300e 2021

The last decent man at the top of Labour was John Smith.
Very true statement...I was gutted when he died
Sadly the current people at the top of the Labour Party are lacklustre...
Even Andy Bernham doesn't cut it for me....
The warning signs were there at the leadership election when Jeremy Corbyns running mates refused to work with him.
This position is important as it organises the critical opposition - which is necessary as a balance & with this bunch of Tory misfits (Osbourne, Cameron, Hart to name but three in order of badness) very necessary to prevent things we don't want, need or deserve being steam rollered through.
The same obtains regardless of who evers in power
Kier Hardy & Ramsey McDonald would be disappointed the way the labour movement & party has dematerialised & lost critical massBREXIT - done properly.
Right now ...We need Government - not Politics
Save the Dipstick Flagbearer-keep it simple, less likely to fail campaign-agenda items:Starting Handles, Acetylene Lamps.
Founder: Dipsticks-R-Us Inc
D3 HSE-perfectly formed, passenger friendly...has real DIPSTICK
Jag XK-but sadly no DIPSTICK...HUGE design fault
FL2 has DIPSTICK..."real comfort in rear seats"
VW Golf wondermobile (?)..has real DIPSTICK
Morris Minor..original DIPSTICK technology..and a real KEY.
