Torque converter recomendations |
|
Hi People
Looking for some help in checking out a source for a Torque converter for my 55 plate Disco 3, disco_micky tells me its sick and has given me (I think) a decent costing to change the converter, but I have found a company in Rainham (RE Engineering) who can supply a recon gear box and new converter (if I read correctly) for just over £1,200, I am presuming this is service exchange, but me thinks it's still a to good to be true price, I hope I am wrong, anyone who knows of, or has used this company please let me know.
I stlll have to have it fitted, and would use Micky, but at £2,500-£3,000 from Land Rover for a box it seems a very good deal for box and converter, all help would be appreciated.

I paid £1200 for new (recon) TC and all the associated bits including new oil and accessories. Not sure if that help you but D3 has been 10x better since I did the work. Much better than Dr Tranny or a gearbox flush IMO.

Thanks DigitalJunior
It's had the Dr Tranny treatment, but just a little better (no shudder), as you said a new torque converter on its own is a viable outlay, but if I can change box and converter for a similar cost then that's the way to go, just need some confidence in the recon job on the box, hence looking for recommendations (good or bad) about the vendor.

I am very surprised to see you could get the TC replaced and recon box for "just over £1200". You won't get a new mechatronic unit in that price. I would dig deeper into the quote. 2005, TDV6 S, Auto, 190k miles, owned from new, V8 Brake Upgrade, Nancom Evo, RLD protector, BAS EGR blanking & Remap, separate ATF cooler, changing all the fluids ahead of time.

Mackies Engineering in Glasgow who are a ZF approved specialised done the rebuild on our D3 plus they give a 2 year warranty and cost was £3149 inluding fitting. They just about replaced all components that are worn plus we needed a new input shaft and mechatronic plus torque convertor. They had the vehicle for 5 days and done an excellent job plus they will take you on a tour of there facilities. To maintan the 2 year warranty they require to do a filter and fluid change at 10000 miles on the gearbox. The gearbox is factory calibrated on the test rig so all you have to do once fitted is do the adptation reset for smooth gear change. It now pulls like a train with no judders or missing gear faults. Thanks for the replies,
As you say Barn1e, seems to good to be true, have tried to contact but no luck yet.
Thanks Anjo14, one problem with spending that amount of money, is, with 140k on the clock I can't justify the expense when the car may only be worth £7k, I appreciate that this price is probably nearer a gearbox and converter change, hence trying to find out any information on the company advertising the service, I may just take the plunge and get disco_mikey to do the converter ?
Still would like to hear from anyone who knows or has used this company.

Is that the Bearmach one you fitted? I was looking recently and couldn't find them online or anywhere selling them apart from your thread, do you have the part number? Is it with Bearmach direct? I'm in same position as OP in that fixing mine is a lot compared to what it is worth now, needs the front diff sorting as well (amongst other things), have seen the Bearmach front diff for £750 on AF.
What is the fitting time for a gearbox?
Cheers,
Matt

Thanks Mikey
That sounds like a plan, will give you a phone, what time scale are you thinking of, I presume given our recent conversation it would be no sooner than next month which would work in fine for me, again thanks, speak soon.

Hi all
I would like to thank Disco_Mikey for a great experience, he sorted my very pressing problems with the disco 3, torque converter, dreaded EPB and a few other common problems, I have no affiliation with him but would happily recommend him to anyone, rates that are realistic, certainly no where near dealer rates, again thank you.

£1,000 cheaper than last year, when I bought mine
It's what I paid fitted. Well worth the money.
